So, had a C5 and enjoyed the car around europe last year, looking to get a newer one soon, and can't decide between the older V10 and the newer V8, is the newer car worth the difference in starting price? I would expect to MTM the older car with remap/exhausts, suspension and big brakes so add on £10k .....but maybe any add ons to a C7 would be more costly too. Any thoughts on living with either esp when touring?

you should check this thread out:

Great forum for advise and tips Audi related.

Personally, having owned both (albeit without any mods), they are great all-rounder cars for crushing the miles in comfort and speed. they are not sports cars - dynamically speaking - so it really depends what you are after. Bet I guess you know this from the C5.

Having said that, the tech and better dynamics of the C7 make it more memorable for me over the C6.

I'll echo that; V10 is a quick old bus but feeling long in the tooth now. In the real world the C7 is better in every regard. If you have the budget for it the C7 RS6 is epic, Audi absolutely knocked it out of the park with that one.

The C7's generic V8 engine is not as special as the C6's V10.

Everything else about the C7 is better, which is no mean feat.

Ok thanks for the views, but do you think the extra 20k for the cheapest C7 vs the better C6 is worth it? Also, any thoughts on resale prices for the C7 in a couple of years if bought at £50k with 5-10k miles per year added......maybe that's just a bit awkward and unpredictable, but thoughts appreciated. I'm not looking for a sportscar, but hopefully another more modern grand tourer with a bit of wickedness under the hood

Hmm the thread doesn't give a categorical answer but I guess that is the way of car development. And we all have different takes on what is the best bits.

C7 is much better than the others (that wonderful V10 in the C6 aside). It handles surprisingly well. Is great place to sit. Goes like stink. And will do 30mpg at a cruise (mine has averaged 23 mpg over first 20000 miles). I couldn't bring myself to buy C5 and C6 when new due to wooden handling but caved in after 5 mins in the C7.

This.

IMO Having driven several of each. Whilst the V10 car is fast in a straight line kinda way. The later car feels "lighter" on it's feet and more agile (relatively speaking it's still heavy :laugh )

Re: the C5. I still like them. But they don't really feel like a Quattro GMBH product. More like "just" the top of the range A6.

That said the C5 RS6 was made by Cosworth whereas the C6v10 and C7 V8 were Audi in house.
The C5 V8 is the only engine to go racing in the ALMS series. gumpert Appolo used the unit too.

I would take the V10 and the latest V8 over the Cosworth unit any day - as would every RS6 owner I have met. But each to their own.

Can I ask why you rate a road engine in higher regard to a successful race proven engine?

Because it's more powerful, torquier, sweeter, refined and hewn from granite. Drive the two back to back and you will see why people rave about the latest turbo V8s (the new AMG unit is another). As for the V10 - are you serious? It is fantastic.

But one is a full race engine the other two are road engines.

In the C5 it was the box that was dire slow shifting and then reliability issues.
From my understanding the 30-100mph C5 v C6 where a 6 speed gave the v10 better off the line there wasn't much in it. Whereas 0-100mph there was 2-3 seconds which is a huge difference.

On the new Merc and Audi I keep hearing "Hot Vee" engines what does that mean?

The engine was redesigned by Cosworth Technology (google says now part of Mahle ) for the RS6 and also they did the V6 in the B5 RS4 (Heads IIRC)

Cars were nailed together by Quattro though in Neckersulm.

I don't know for sure that the biTurbo engine in the C5 was used in racing. What car?

North American Speed challenge championship. They won it 2-3 years back to back.

Turbos sit inside the V.
Try one and you will see what the fuss is about.

Is the benefit of doing that so that the width of the engine is narrower so it can be pushed further back to reduce traditional Audi front end overhang?

Plus the C7 really will hit 30mpg on long journeys - remarkable considering.

No, because the turbos regardless of where they sit have no bearing on how far forward a longitudinal engine is in the bay.

That CarThrottle link is bloody awful btw!
