Private plate transfer, off the car?

Hi, anyone got experience of doing this, and how quick it can be done?
I dont want to not have my Cerb this weekend cos the plate isnt off.

The guy is going to sort it, but neither are sure on timescales? Couldnt see anything relevant on the DVLC site?

Whats your experience here please?

Go to local DVLA with correct form, V5, tax disc, MOT & they'll do it there & then. Retention certificate & V5 will come back through the post. You'll keep the "tear off".

There is a local DVLA office 5 mins from the guy. Its all a bit of a hassle tho as the owner is actually abroad, and its the dad who is selling for him. So a signature could be a stumbling block here?

I dont have a plate to put on, just want any old reg for now so I can get the car. I assume they will just give a new number there and then?

I think it will get back it's original Plate.

Should get its original Reg back. If you're in a REAL rush, find out what that was, and get the plates ordered ASAP from fancyplates.com. Any "legit" plate place will need the paperwork, etc. to make them up for you (which you obviously won't have till the weekend).

It took about 10 mins to do it when I went to the Luton DVLA a month or two ago.

From memory of 2 recent transfers Ive done; if you are taking a plate from a retention cert to put on, they can do it straight away (Im guessing its the same if the guy is taking his plate off and putting on a retention cert?). If he is transfering the plate from one car to another, it takes a little longer 7-10 days to get the V5s back, in my experience, and you not supposed to change the plate on the car until new V5s are received.

IIRC you are not supposed to change the plates until you have the TAX disk with the new reg not the V5.

The DVLA office will issue the tax disk with the new reg there and then and keep the old one. if you do it by post you are supposed to keep the old tax until the new one arrives and then send in the old one after the plats have been changed.

They stamp everything else with the new reg (mot etc) this was my experience 2 years ago so unless its changed or they make it up as they go along (most likely).

The guy has sorted it all today!!
Got a new plate, and taxed for 6mths. Im paying the tax mind.....
