Air Filter and cold Air

continuing on from comments in one of the other threads about what a bugger it is to get to the air filter and about Act getting the filter Box produced.
My 96 has just the Filter.No box been like that since I have had it and I have seen others the same.
In your opinions should it have one and will it help getting cold air to the Filter and stop warm air getting to it from the engine bay, as pointed out by Johno at the weekend.
Or does the bonnet dipping down in Front of it help prevent this?

I believe the early cars had just the 'cone' type filter and it was later ones that had the box. I am suprised as I have a 96 and it has a box?? Perhaps your has been modified?
The cone is a lot easier to change and you can get a K&N lifetime filter....however from my lotus days and many debates it was agreed that a box was better as it will help prevent hot air from being drawn in, and the colder the air the denser it is and the better for performance(dont ask me why we need someone technical to pitch in). However as the filter is placed at the front where the air is drawn in, I really dont see it will make a lot of difference. I definitely wouln't run out and buy an airbox!

Yes the early 500's had the cylinder filter with a small cowel (which is probably better removed as it vertually touches the filter, very difficult to tell when they changed approx 1996 although many earlier cars have the filter box with panel filter, would like to look at a early type to see if a box & panel filter could be easily fitted.

just for your info,i've made an air box out of carbon fibre,which was relatively easy to construct using a flat panel filter.The induction area has also been widened and the number plate lowered. Can provide details but you would have to make the mould yourselves. Unless i set up production, which is very unlikely to happen,' sigh of relief from ACT'.
