Visited a mate in Exmouth over the weekend parking outside his flat and didn't realise till I got back to mine later last night that someone had bumped the front wing causing a dent, scratched paint work and broken side light. No note, CCTV or witnesses. Should I report to the police? Would that be required for an insurance claim?

Just ring your insurers to get the ball rolling. No actual need to report it unless they require a crime reference no.

.... is it worth claiming for? pay privately and keep your insurance clean.

Agreed, no point in making your life overpriced for the next few years by actually claiming on insurance if you can afford to stump up for it upfront. And if there's zero chance of finding who did it, then reporting it would be futile. If you did report to insurer and a reference number was needed you could report it then.

Seconded, something very similar happened to me (slightly more damage in my scenario) and I stupidly reported it to insurance. Cost me £250 excess (when it could have probably been remedied for less) and goes down as a fault accident because they can't recover costs. I hope whichever toe-rag did it has their loins infested with the fleas of a thousand camels.

Got a quote for the damage at £700, checked my excess and it is £500 so no point going down the insurance route anyway. Thanks chaps.
