Ok so long story short;
Virgin Media want to upgrade me from 70mb (4-5mb up) to 100mb (plus phone and tv deal) for an extra £4 a month.

As i mainly use the net for surfing, gaming or streaming, im just wondering if the extra 30mb is actually worth having or not? I think when i was on 30mb, it was only 2 up

Just me in the house as well, bout 7 things connected to the net

TIA

For gaming you care about ping time rather than download speed above a certain amount and you are already there.

Having more bandwidth is good if you have several people streaming movies and you want to play games.

The extra download speed, probably not.

If there's extra upload speed, that's worth having - uploading the contents of a 1TB hard drive at 20Mb/s (as I recently have) is bad enough, but at 2Mb/s I'd be climbing the walls...

I think they're upgrading all of their packages (so 70 goes to 100, 100 to 200, 200 to 300) which the news reported as being for free, so you might find you can get the better internet without paying any extra?

I'm on the 100Mb at the moment and there was some maintenance last week but so far speeds haven't changed. 100Mb is 6Mb upload, again 'apparently' they'll also be increasing the uploads speeds across the board as part of this round of upgrades.

The extra download won't make any difference at the speeds you're at, the extra upload may make life generally a little quicker but for gaming it probably won't make much difference.

This!

I've got 100Mbps per second for this very reason - I'm not making this up - Jnr was sat in front of the gaming PC in the living room yesterday afternoon - it's playing Roblox, he's "borrowed" my work laptop and that's next to him streaming a how-to video on YouTube, there's another YouTube video playing on his iPhone the other side of him, rather than try to get my head around all that I left him to it and retired to the bedroom as I wasn't feeling great - laid on the bed, turned on the TV to discover the NowTV box has been humming away since 8am playing YouTube video after YouTube video - Minecraft this time, all in HD.

Never under estimate an 11 year old's ability to use bandwidth.
