Domain name registration, the end of Domainmonster - 123reg
Discussion
Anyone else involved in this business ? Domainmonster have been excellent but announced today they have sold the business to 123-reg who are very firmly on my "avoid" list.
Any recommendations for competent domain registrars ? This is just registration, DNS and hosting I do elsewhere, but of course if the registration breaks then nothing works !

123-reg went to the top of my avoid list a few years ago when they introduced a £10 "ransom fee" that you had to pay to move a domain away from them. I don't think they do that any more but it caused me a load of grief (and morally said a lot about them) so I won't go back whilst there are other choices !

I use 123reg for registrations, must say I've never had any problems with them.
I've had 123 for years. I've had no problems with them. They were very helpful when I asked for advice. A URL was bought through the website host and getting it back from them proved 'difficult'. They helped and didn't charge. That said, I've never tried to take a URL away from them. After this announcement I had planned to move my domains, as not a fan of 123 reg, but hadn’t found a better alternative, so carried on with Domain Monster. Now they are closing the website and migrating everyone to 123 reg I am seriously looking to move away.
I had considered AWS Route 53, as I run everything else through AWS, but am mindful that I should keep domain/DNS separate. So looking for other options. Domains Foundry is looking like the best bet for me at the moment, does anyone have any experience with them? Or any other recommendations?

Thanks. That's annoying Clouflare don't cover .co.uk. Rules them out for me as I want the 30 or so domains I have in one place. My preference would be a UK company that provides a VAT receipt but just general competence is more important to me than price !
Pretty much what I am looking for - like Domain Monster before they were taken over.I've been with 123-reg for one hell of a long time and have registered quite a lot of domains with them, so am none too chuffed with the recent .co fiasco and also the dramatic hike in the renewal fees which does make my eyes water.
What really annoys me is that there doesn't appear to be an easy way to bulk move domains away from 123-reg, or indeed cancel a domain aside from cancelling the auto-renew. I think you need to register with Nominet to move a .co.uk domain because 123-reg certainly don't make it easy!
Have been looking at moving a few domains over to Google at: https://domains.google/ to see how they perform.
Ought to mention that luckily for me I registered most of my .com domain names with GoDaddy which allows far easier control of what you want to do with your domain names, and also provide a real 020 phone number should you wish to speak to someone.
It's a real shame how downhill 123-reg have gone but that seems to be par for the course at the moment!

Anyone used UKReg recently ? Now I know they are owned by Fasthosts, and those of us that have been around this a long time will all have a Fasthosts horror story - but I understand Fasthosts have grown up a lot in recent years and although no Zen Internet when it comes to support and efficiency they are now considered OK.
The UKReg operation looks to be at least a bit separate and I like the Domainmonsterish look of the website and what it says, no transfer out, forwarding, good DNS control, price is OK (although cheekily they exclude VAT).
They are on my shortlist - but I will keep looking !

OP here, I've ended up moving to Namecheap. So far so good.
They are not UK based therefore no VAT receipt so no company claim back but their Dollar pricing was lower than any of the UK companies I considered.
Everything else seems OK.
Most of my active domains have UK DNS servers so I don't expect any issues with the Registrar being non UK and they have free privacy protection for .com domains.
