Another Canems Upgrade
Discussion
Picked up my car from Lloyd Specialist Development last Friday.
Following mods done:
- Full Canems conversion
- Larger sized Bosch injectors to accommodate the 5.0L
- Accel Extreme 9000 wires with ceramic plug boots, ditching the old (and unreliable) plug extenders
- Switchable second map with 'pops and bangs' on the overrun
- Refurbished steering rack + alignment
- Mintex pads, racing brake fluid (already had braided hoses all round)
Daniel and Nathan (and their staff) were very helpful during the process, answering all questions quickly, and doing a neat job on the work. Car was dyno'ed and provided 315bhp (flywheel) on their pessimistic dyno, and they expect a more optimistic dyno to c.330bhp - the team was impressed by how strong the engine pulled. When I bought the car 2 years ago, I got c. 290hbp at the flywheel on an optimistic dyno.
When driving the car home to London via a nice A and B road detour, it was immediately noticeable how the shunting/'kangarooing' has disappeared, and the car is happy to pootle through 30 zones in 4th without the need the ride the clutch. For reference, my car shunted between 1000-1800 rpm, meaning a 30 zones used to be a lot of clutch riding in 2nd. Power delivery is a lot better and car feels a lot stronger in the mid-range. Also idling has changed dramatically, being consistent over a 5hr journey including 1hr of rush hour crawling through Central London, which used to be a bit of a nightmare. Pops and bangs map makes the 8 year old in me happy, but can be easily switched off (button on dash) when not required
Also managed to connect my laptop to the ECU yesterday, which makes it handy to trace faults or make minor adjustments (such as when the fans kick in).
All in all very happy with the mods thus far - next week I'll take the car to its first track day to see how the overall package stands up to some more intensive use
Picture of the car to be collected, and the updated engine bay below
