...and, as has already been pointed out, it's not even nine years old. First moved under it's own steam in August 2008.

Those of us who can distinguish a train from a locomotive are well aware that a very small percentage of the train in this speed trial is fairly new, while the overwhelming majority of it is not

Preserved locomotives running on the mainline are a fairly regular event in the UK now, and this got me wondering. I'm aware that there is a heritage scene in the US, especially with Union Pacific (including their current restoration of a 'Big Boy' to running order - http://www.up.com/aboutup/community/inside_track/h... ), but are there many other countries where you can be hauled by steam on the national network? France, Germany, etc....?

Yup, the Germans have usung steam locos on timetabled services for a while.

I expect quite a few engines could do this on the mainline, if allowed. Apart from the obvious A4s, 71000 and the southern pacifics are easily capable of over 100mph. 4472 probably could, and I guess the Duchess whichever one it is at the moment. Nothing from the GWR though because they peaked a bit early.
