After doing around 500 miles during a 3 day trip to the w. country, I left the car standing for a few days with the handbrake on. The car only really gets used at w/ends./holiday periods.

After starting it up and engaging reverse gear I released the handbrake and it felt like the brakes were still on. I gently moved the car forward and the problem went.It has done this before, but this was the
most noticeable

Anyone know what is causing this and can I do anything to stop it happening ?

The car was in the garage unused for 2 months after christmas (with its handbrake on )and I did'nt. have this problem when I began to use it again.

Unless you park on a slope, dont bother putting the handbrake on if the car is to be left for long periods, especially if the wheels are wet.

Just keep it in gear.

Thanks for the tip.

P.S. Nice looking black 944 you have- though I would not say no to a black car, I am a little bit wary about black or grey cars in terms of visability. e.g. the slate grey Honda Accord in the recent add they run looks great but can be difficult to spot in murky weather.

Mine does exactly the same thing if left parked for a week or two. I think all it is a bit of rust build up on the brake discs.
