By crash, I mean be the instigator of, not taken out as part of another accident. I'm not including getting involved in a different accident as that's out of his control.

Additionally, the above assumes no mechanical issues.

Is reliability a concern in indycar racing?

He will drive spectacularly well, narrowly missing out on the podium in 4th / 5th place, and then instead of being happy about it he will blame the car, declare that the team will never win anything and leave under a cloud burning every bridge as he leaves in such a way that he'll (probably) never be welcome in Indycar again.

That is the Alonso way.

Honda had no engine retirements during last years race. Chevy had two, with a third Chevy car failing for an electrical problem.

The most common problem for a car last year causing a retirement was "hitting something".

I'm not sure how competitive his Indycar will be, or even what the differences between teams are. (In terms of performance)

Nigel Mansell done well when he went over there, so Alonso must have a reasonable chance if the car allows.

Wonder what odds you could get for that?

Probably not the 1000:1 you'd like...but yeah, I'd be interested to know that too.

His finishing position will depend on if his teammate has a 'crash'...

He is a great racer, great driver.
I dont see why he wont do well, and i suspect in a competitive car again he will fire right up.

I went for the most unlikely

Indy is a little like the grand national - part race, part lottery.

You never know.

He's a great driver but I think it's most likely he'll be outside the top 10. Hope I'm wrong though ( usually am!)

I assume he'll be testing before the event. But I haven't seen any details of how much he will be doing.

How did Kimi get on when he did Nascar?
Howe did JPM get on when he went over?

F1 drivers are simply better. Justin WIlson was not brilliant in F1 but pretty good when he went. Which suggests the level isn't as high as you'd think it should be.

JPM started out over there.

It's not that they aren't as good - but it's a differing skill set. Also, Wilson pissed about in Jaguars and Minardis - Indy cars are chassis and engines (sort of) off the shelf - certainly much more than in F1.

That's a really over-simple theory, sorry

Nige won in 1993 as a rookie, but lets face it Nige is a bit excellent, and he was kept very honest by Fittipaldi, who was 928.

Alonso is also a bit excellent. But it's not the cake walk you seem to think

I dread it when F1 drivers do Indy.
It just seems so darned randomly dangerous. And you sort of get attached to these guys over the years. Not a fan of Alonso but I'd hate to see anything happen to him.
I was convinced Mansel would get hurt when he did it too.

Maybe I'm just a wuss,

Physically testing the car is going to be very limited, although I understand that he will get behind the wheel of the Andretti Autosport Sim. Call it what you like but Alonso's McLaren will be a rebranded AA car.

I really don't think you car draw any comparison from what Kimi and Juan both did in Nascar, although they race on ovals thats about as close as it goes. Indycar far more comparable to F1 than Nascar, Juan Pablo Montoya narrowly missed out on the title in 2015, Scott Dixon pipped him right at the death.

As mentioned before the 500 is part lottery, part skill. If the sun shines on Fernando he has ever chance of tasting the Milk at the brick yard.

Well the last 2 deaths in Indy car have both been British ,so it's stuck in your memory a bit.
