I took the fuel rail off to get better access to the alternator. Came off nice and easy and was cracking on when I noticed a rectangular rubber washer thing from the connector of the injectors actually in the hole of the injector.

st !!!! Thought I.

Pointy nose pliers for an important game of operation and with the slightest of touches to hook it out, pooof and it was gone.

I think I might cry.

and I can't get the alternator off.

I'm presuming you have to loosen the plate off with the four little hex headed bolts but they're as tight as F$%K. The long bolt and short adjuster bolt are out, but it doesn't want to come out.

Alternator is out - just needed a bit more brute force.

The regulator I bought isn't the right one though, stripping it down, I think I might as well just put a new one on.

Now I have to recover the lost washer, I've got a Dyson animal and a thin plastic pipe - I'm going fishing....

Christ that must be an awful feeling. I've not got any tips I'm afraid but I will be praying for you.

Buy a USB boroscope from Amazon for £20 - have a beer tonight and when the camera comes, pass it through the throttle body and see if you can't see the thing - easier fishing with eyes on it!

I can't visualise the part you are talking about, so this may not be relevant - but the plastic pintle caps on the ends of injectors go through engines regularly without causing any harm at all. They do smell a bit though.

We use a company in Blackpool to recon alternators - for about £70. Good deal and a good service -pm me if you want

Dont worry about the rubber washer, kind of like eating sweetcorn, nature will take its course and will come out just like it went in but maybe a little errrr browner.

I didn't find it but I have ordered an endoscope thing for £10 to see if I can see it.

It's reassuring to hear of the "sweetcorn effect" with these things if all else fails. BTW, the part I'm talking about is the little rectangular washer in this image...

Look on the bright side Byff, theres a thread on the Alfa forum where a guy unknowingly dropped a tiny ball bearing from a socket set extension into an intake.

It did a lot more damage than a bit of rubber.

I took a look in my toolbox and found a ballbearing was about to fall out of my draper bit set holder, felt a bit hot and cold when I saw it, I tape up anything similar now.

What about wrapping a welding rod in masking tape (or similar) but with the sticky side out, one continous bit of tape all the way up the rod so it does'nt come off, then you can bend it to what ever shape suits, have a torch and another rod handy so if you get it, you can use the second rod like chopsticks and get it out!

The endoscope thing I've ordered has a hook attachment so I'm enjoying the weekend with beers and i'll tackle the problem once it gets delivered.

The offending washer has successfully been removed.

Took the throttle bodies off and it was sitting in view, perched to the side of the valve. Thin bit of wire to hook it out and job's a good'un.

BTW, what's best for re-sealing the rockerbox cover?

Do you have a link for this? It sounds ideal for the locating and extraction of a loose bolt extraction in the dash of my VX

Also great news about fishing the offending part out - well played!

It arrived today and having stuck it up my nose and in my ear, it would have done the job perfectly.
