Looking for ideas for new games, my favourite genre is PC Strategy games, I've been a big fan of Sudden Strike, Civ and Total War series.
Liked most of the Civ series but disappointed with Civ 5 & 6, nothing new about them.
Really like the strategic and tactical aspects of Total War but the Warhammer franchise really has little appeal for me.
Suggestions/Ideas?

Total War Warhammer has been my favourite Total War since the first Rome. For ages Total War has just been more of the same and it's been a nice change to see completely different units and a new setting. I've recently started my first campaign and playing as the Greenskins. There's a good sense of humour to the game too.
Ever since I watched Jason and the Argonauts as kid, I've always wanted my own skeleton army like the one in the film

I played X-com In the past but in the past but felt it is just modded Civ. Starships is the same. I got more re-playability out of the free game Wesnoth.
I played Stellaris last year, got a bit fed up of the poor AI. AI Strategy that is all min-max rush and nothing smart. The total lack of control at the tactical level was a huge missed opportunity. I will be watching out to see if the next version can make that leap. If they can get a good meld of both tactical and strategic balance, as good as TW, they will have a winner for sure.
I tried some of the Air Land Battle series but found them to be far too tightly scripted for my tastes. I prefer free form scenarios.
I've tried most of new generation of 3D City building games but generally been disappointing.
Cheers for the suggestions, please keep them coming, I really looking for truly brilliant games, a long term series, I can stick with for a while.
I have to say the The Wargame series is excellent but quite difficult due to the lack of a pause button, you sometimes just get too much going on at once and it can end up being annoying.
The new Sudden Strike 4 is out shortly, worth seeing how good that will be.
Xcom 2 is fantastic
Warhammer Total War is a keeper.
If you like the Warhammer 40k stuff then you can go for...
Armageddon, its a hex type game but its not bad and there are a few dlc's for it.
You also have Dawn of War 3 coming out soon too
The latest 40k "hex based strategy" is Sanctus Reach, not really had time to get to grips with it but its meant to be quite difficult and its more focused on section level rather than overall battlefield level (but i have not gotten that far into it yet).
If you like sea games then you need to play Atlantic Fleet, apart from being cheap its also pretty fun.
There are some of the older games like Sins of a Solar Empire (plus there are expansions out for that), but I have found some crackers by just browsing through Steam.

HOI4, CK2 and EU4 will all more than meet your desire for grand strategy, or marrying your own daughter before being murdered by a vengeful uncle leaving an inbred wastrel on the throne.
I can vouch for these games. Very, very deep and are coupled with a terrible tutorial system. Makes for a steep learning curve:
Although the AI in HOI4 can be a pain in the arse. I was marching my way through the USSR with my buddies the German Republic until our borders met up and the Germans started to attack from my territory. Great, until they pour so many men in that my supply networks collapsed and all confrontations with the USSR ended in stalemate. Effectively ended the game.
Cheers Germany, you b
ds. Depends how old you're willing to go. I feel most of the best RTS's came out around the turn of the century. Total Annihilation, Age of Empires 2, Rise of Nations, Ground Control, Earth 2150, Alpha Centauri. The only later ones i've enjoyed are Black & White 2 and Rome: Total War. Haven't got around to trying Supreme Commander yet.

Ground Control? Haven't heard that name for a long time! Loved it and remember I kept replaying a mission where you had to sneak a special forces unit around killing some anti-air guns (or something like that). The main thing that annoyed me was friendly fire, lost count of how many units I lost when a tank randomly stopped in front of a friendly tank that was already firing.£1.69 on GOG, really tempted by that.

The Wargame series is worth a look: European Escalation, Air Land Battle and Red Dragon.
These games are great, quite hard and you cant pause it like you can in Total War. They are doing a WW2 version soon which looks fantastic. On this at least I believe you can pause by setting the time rate to mega slow
