Hi

Looking for anyone with experience of a separated shoulder? A month ago I came off my bicycle at about 20mph. Landed on my shoulder, ruptured all the ligaments and have been in a sling for past 4 weeks with my collarbone pushed up on my left side due to the dropped shoulder blade. Injury is a Grade 3/4.

I have seen the consultant today and I need to decide between a LARS ligament repair of the joint or wait another three months and review then. Currently I am a lot better than I have been although still do not have full range of movement and cannot lift with the arm.

Does anyone have any experience with similar, just looking for any experiences and how recovery has been with or without surgery? I am an active cyclist and also lift weights so looking to get back to that in due course.

I don't do shoulders

This page has more than enough info on it, written by a colleague of mine

what you don't find their isn't worth knowing. For Dacron read LARS on that page. Although, even the LARS is just a relaunched Leeds-Keio

My Girlfriend went over the bars at Llandegla trail centre & ended up with a pretty severe AC separation.

She had an operation to repair the shoulder with a synthetic ligament. The procedure was called the Surgilig Technique. The first fortnight after the operation were quite uncomfortable for her & lots of Tramadol was on the agenda. It took around 3 months of twice weekly phisio sessions to get enough movement & strength before she was back on the bike. All told it was 6 months of visits to the physio before she was fully recovered. She's left with a smallish scar & a lump on the top of her shoulder but the range of movement etc is just about where it was pre accident.

She gets the odd niggle from it but keeps on top of it with stretches & exercises. The end of the clavicle is lopped of during the op & this can cause problems later on but so far other than a "funny??" pain there's been no major issues.

From what we were told anything above a Type 3 (Rockwood Scale) needs an operation to repair. Even a 3 may need surgery depending on how the shoulder is going to be used (activity, manual worker etc). My Mrs managed a 5 so an operation was the only option. I know guys who've bust shoulders before & even a Grade 2 separation can take a very long time to heal & even then never be quite right.

Thanks a lot for your relies. The link is really interesting reading, I had not seen that. Thanks also to Ray for his message

Surgeon says he's not taking any bone off if I get it done, just putting in the LARS and bringing it back together
