Emailing recruitment agencies?

Has anybody got any tips around this? Not something I've ever done as I've been headhunted for both my roles since graduating by recruiters via LinkedIn. However as avid readers of the lounge may know I will soon be very likely to relocate to a completely different part of the country, so will probably need to get in touch with a few agencies and get on their books. Possibly a stupid question but is this the "done thing"? Along the lines of:

"Hi,

I'm moving, find me a job?"


Any tips on successfully doing so? Presumably the usual - be quite specific about what I'm looking for & leave a few points open to discussion to get a dialogue going?

I'd be interested to see the responses here. My experience of recruitment agencies as a job-seeker is that they never reply directly, simply add you to their mailing list and send generic emails for jobs you'd never be qualified for, nor interested in. And then persistently ignore you when you request to be removed from said list.

Unless you have a relationship with a recruiter they won't go out of their way to help you find a role unless you are a stand-out candidate or they know that they have clients who will want to see your CV profile (ie they think they can place you even if they don't have a specific role on that fits).

Your best approach is to apply for jobs in any number of ways, pick up the phone to follow up on applications, if practical go and see a handful of recruiters.

Also, do your own research. If you know the industry you are working in then map out some of the companies within it, make some direct aprpoaches too.

Get your cv up on Jobsite or similar.

If you're any good / in demand you'll get calls from recruiters. Can then start developing relationships with them from there.

Post your CV on all the relevant job sites a few weeks before you move. Change address to reflect new location.

Apply for roles as they become available. Agencies will call if they find your cv relevant to a role they are recruiting for and the ste agencies will contact you about roles which aren't.

Thats basically it.
