Sorry guys, this one probably gets done to death in here but.....

Yesterday on my way in to work I found hammersmith bridge closed after some monkey ploughed into in after the boat race at the weekend -

No worries - I thought, as I used to live in the area and though I could park up and walk the remainder..

The area in general has 'residents permits only' but the specific I parked in had:

no yellow lines
no 'No Parking' notices withing a good 30 yards or so of where I parked
no residents parking notices

Naturally I was a little irked to return to my car to find a yellow stuck on ticket.

How should I best contest this? - I was genuinely unaware that there were restrictions in place in that particular area

Had you strayed in to a controlled parking zone (CPZ?). In which case you would have passed a pair of signs, one on each side of the road as you entered (like a new speed limit, but for parking).

I'm not certain of the road markings needed within the zone, but this could be an explanation. Best to retrace your steps and double check this - make sure there is a pair of signs on every entry to the area!

Have a look at www.parkingticket.co.uk for a some good advice.

After consulting the DoT signage & lines division!! even in a CPZ(where they need two signs to indicate there is a CPZ in operation at all openings to the road) they still need yellow lines on the road to indicate no parking, the only thing they no longer need (in CPZ's only, if you are lucky enough to not be in a CPZ signs must have lines and lines must have signs) is 'No Parking' signs along the road.
