Looks like a good little project for anyone on the lookout. A 1982 Geep needing a bit of restoration. Flat wings, flat bonnet & Bedford CF back lights and looking pretty original.

Just shown it to Mrs Tonka ......"I like that "

She can just see it now " Painted purple , 1.6 with auto box to pose around in".

I can just see it too though my vision is more "2.8 V6 , auto box , twin side exhausts to storm around in"

Its only a 400 mile round trip to collect it Ian ..... hmmmm right who owes me a favour........better still who owes me money......now where did I put that lottery ticket?

Can see the poor old piggy bank taking a bashing

"but thats what the housekeeping money is for love"

The 2.8 isnt a great engine, the mechanical FI can be a pain, and the heads dont flow that well due to only having 2 exhaust ports...

we chucked the FI in the bin on the old racer and bolted a crb on instead....

Dont want the Injection one , always had carbed Granadas for the road lot less hassle and around 125 bhp would be enough , dont want to mess about with all that extra wiring either , just need a big hole in the top of the engine to help empty the Escort tank quickly!

Had a 2.0 Pinto and auto box lined up ready but once you have tamed it you want more , Rover V8 would be nice and lighter but scrap grannys are so cheap (apologies to any older ladies reading this)

I once saw the weight of an Essex V6 quoted as 440lbs, that's 200kg in new money. Luckily that was after I'd hooked one out of my TVR to replace the clutch. A fair bit of torque but not a powerful engine unless you start to tune enough for the standard bits to get marginal, then it gets expensive. Stick to the Rover V8 in a kit car although I'm not sure how stable that amount of torque so high up would be.

So I'll be looking for an 1100 x-flow then......

I suppose its down to personal choice , got a x-flow already , Zetec means electronics (scary/expensive), so its back to the Pinto or V6 I guess , anyone dabbled with anything non-Ford other than the Rover lump ?

This is the curse of the front wheel drive craze and ever more stringent emissions rules.

Whichever bargain basement Geep I end up buying for the missus I will still need a nice simple RWD auto donor.

Is anyone going to be at Stoneleigh with a Pinto auto I could have a ride in ?

Cheers

Mark

The Samuri has a 3.9 carb fed v8 and rover box... but thats coupled to a much beefier sam chassis, some rally suspension and a capri rear axle, complete with anti tramp bars...A geep can twist the chassis on full lock with a 1300 xflow so with a v8 I expect you could tuen it into a corkscrew.... some triangulation and a full cage would be prudent..

Rover v8 in a Geep has been done a few times but its a big engine even if it does weigh the same as the pinto...

If i was going to put a v8 in a geep i think i'd get a rangy chassis, cut the geep body into 4 bits and add bits to make it fit.. now that would be a laugh....

I did once work out that a sam body would drop on nicley

There must be somthing better than a pinto but i cant think what it would be... with an auto you really want capacity so i suppose it probably is a v6...

There was a very nice v6 auto geep in redditch i'll ask the guy that built it about it next time i see him. although I do know he fabticated wishbone suspension for the front.... and the mpg could be horrendous....

I may have to reserve judgement on the Pinto until I get the oppurtunity to experience it first hand.

The V6 is an engine I trust having seen so many survive constant abuse on the banger track and still come back for more with zero oil pressure and a block full of steam!

My deepest regret is in not being in the position to build a kit from scratch years ago when the donor vehicles had not reached their own current classic status.

I have promised my wife I will create a Geep she can drive comfortably , automatic transmission is the only option for her due to health reasons also power steering is a neccessity especially with all that engine hanging over the front.

My wife wanted to replace our Accord with a Honda CRV in the next 12 months , now 5 months into Jago ownership she has decided a Civic will suffice for boring days , she wants a Geep of her own!

Have you considered a CVH??? They are overlooked due to the Zetec but have minimal electronics and are a breeze to convert to RWD. Quite a few going into kits now. They even have engine mounting pads like a xflow/pinto. They are reliable up to rocketship mileages and are available in various capacities to suit either the need for speed or insurance sensitivities. Some of them even have a carb!!!
There's a 1600 in my Escort cabrio which I've done a little work on- cambelt, followers, thermostat & carb strip and it's an easy engine to work on. Cheap to buy and cheap spares too. It'll be lighter than a pinto as well.
Cheers

what about a bmw 316/318 ? old ones are cheap they do big mileages and with the specialists out there parts shouldnt be too dear lots of them were autos too and already rwd only other thought was hyundai stellar nice mitsubishi engine but ive never seen an auto???
ive seen the steering column off an mgf and the electric power steering is mounted on the column about the size of a wiper motor would be much less hassle to replace a column than all the hydraulics and rack for a normal version - never seen one transplanted though think modern micras and fiat puntos have similar systems too

The powered column idea is already being used on one of the Cobra kits , its certainly something to consider especially as the MGF is pretty small and based around Metro bits.

Stellars were part Cortina based werent they? I am sure they did an auto version , BMW especially early 320 would be nice but doubt there is room for that gorgeous lump.

2.0 twin cam out of late Sierra would be different (probably already been done in a Geep?) but it would probably need the 4 speed auto box , then I have to worry about proper wiring not string and chewing gum!

There was an article in classic ford recently where a chap fitted the MGF electric power steering motor to a rather tasty Mk 1 Escort. However, he has yet to figure out how to make it work correctly as it apparently needs a sensor fitting to the driveline assembly somewhere (in order to send a signal back to the motor so it 'knows' the car is not stationary).

Not sure how useful/useless this info is Mark.

once put a fiat twincam in a westfield was out of a 132 and i seem to remember there were lots of auto ones of those around at the time.....real dream talk a fiat 130 lump very similar to dino engine bet that'd sound nice on sidepipes
lots of cheap carltons around too engines do space ship miles and plenty were auto - never been a vauxhall fan though and i'd guess youd have to have dizzy cap sticking out the dash of a geep lol

Having a go at Vauxhalls? nah ..... just at the length of the Carlton lump which might put the dizzy where the dash is in a Geep!
