What can i say,my car was Asmatic and i did not realise!
Got rid of the Cat and have found that i have got a Monster, yes U.V.noise levels have gone a bit wild but worth it.The increase in preformance really shocked me i now have a Turbo just so much more responsive.
Thought i would share that with you all now off to play need to get on a RR and soon see what the Ponies are doing.

I have a 996 C4 and has pondered over removing the cats for a while. do you know of someone that could do it for me and if it is possible on my car?

Cheers

T2's run so rich because of CIS (at idle), that the CATs die and just create a massive restriction. Replacing my CAT was the best bolt on mod I made.

I replaced fitted a cat bypass to my car (964) did alter the sound a little and it seemed to rev a little more freely but thats probably my imagination.

very easy to do on my car.

Interesting thread but is not a CAT a legal requirement?

Sorry if I am being daft.

Not on my car Yes there is a bennefit to a 964 !

I would imagine that newer cars may need the cat re fitting prior to any MOT. although maybe a modern Porsche engine could scrape by without it.

If the newer cars are as easy to do as mine was its not a problem.

edited to make sense. I think cats are only a legal requirement on cars registered after 1993 onwards.

emissions are the requirement, cats help you achieve this.
You do not need a cat on a car after a 93, but obviously you do need to pass the mot emissions.....

Depends on the car. You can get mixed results.

It had a bit of an (positive) effect on my MR2 in terms of top-end HP (gained a tiny bit), but had an negative effect on low-down torque of which there wasn't much to start with anyway. I guess this was due to better breathing at high RPM and less back pressure/pulse-tuning effect at low revs.

The best thing about gutting the cat on a naturally aspirated car is the noise.

I think cat converters are a legal requirement on cars regestered from '93 onwards...not 100% sure though.
