How are we to feed everyone if we abandon all the advances in farm technology since that time?-people may prattle about organic farming but it is not an efficient way of growing crops.

That's because Mr Wogan lives a rather unruffled existance in Media Nirvana Waters or wherever..., yes he's right, and yes, it will undoubtly lead to those measures, but it still doesn't make the report wrong does it?.

I'm flattered that these experts think we are that significant - remind me again how long the earth has been in existence and also how long man has inhabitted it? Kind of pales in significance, wouldn't you say?
Still, suppose the have to justify their research budgets. If they'd ended up saying "Actually, carry on as you are, everything is fine...", they'd be drawing the dole tomorrow....

Anyway, it's not the usual fodder, the report is as much about the 'have's' and 'have not's' and how that gulf will widen. Open your eyes, the relentless march is underway. Everywhere you go, it is all just consumption, it has very little to do with political ideology or doctrine and everything to do with the fact that we are breeding more and more consumers. Do the maths. Of course, you're correct about one thing about the difference between being "a true believer in the cause" or not. Beyond the horizon, the seeing and unseeing will collide.
Basically the world view of the Guardian/BBC is that the people of the 3rd world should be happy living in mud huts carving 'ethnic' art or whatever.
Meanwhile in the West the people should be taxed heavily and then these taxes should be taken and distributed to all the grateful peasants of the 3rd world.

The problem with the world today is there are too many humans and we seem to think that we all have a god given right to live forever and consume what we want.
3rd world death rates due to malaria are simply stunning, yet the population is increasing....WTF would we do without the mosquito?
I don't have children and this was always a conscious decision as children are the most environmentally damaging things we can introduce into the Western world.
The Canadians are currently culling 1 MILLION seals to protect fish stocks......we should be culling HUMANS not
seals. We cannot all live there are just too many of us. By the end of my life time say another 40 years the population will be so big there will be even more death and suffering in the world, but the whole point of this is that is life, we all die and the more humans there are the more that will die.
The gap between the developed and 3rd world (what happened to the 2nd world?) will always be there and IMHO will grow over the next 50 years.
This is a very depressing posting, but unfortunately no government will do anything about over population of humans.
