Gearbox and Fan Belt types?

I have been asked if I have the earlier gearbox, or the later T5 - How would I know? I have a 1995 chim, and no idea. I have also been asked if the fan belt is the newer serpentine type, or not? What am I looking for? As far as I can tell from the reams of bills I have, everything is as standard.

Later, T5 gearboxes have reverse below 5th.
Earlier, Rover gearboxes have reverse doglegged beside 1st.

Serpentine engines have a wide, flat drive (fan) belts
Pre-serpentine (earlier) engines have old fashioned, narrow, V-section fanbelts.

Changeover point was aound mid-1994, I think.

It is indeed...just one flat (polyvee is the correct technical term) belt that weaves its way around a number of pulleys (crankshaft, alternator, power steering pump and water pump).

Trouble is, non-Soft Southern Jessy (ie. no power steering) editions of the pre-serpentine engine also have just one (traditional, narrow vee-section) drivebelt which runs from crank pulley to alternator to water pump (this I am sure of, 'cos I run a non-PAS early, pre-serp Griffith!)

It is only the PAS equipped (or more rarely, air con equipped) pre-serp cars which have two drivebelts (both narrow vee-section).

...so the clearest way of describing a pre-serp engine is by the section of the belt.
