And so the saga continues!
Got some time to work on the car today so changed all 8 plugs. Used the ones that ChimpOnGas recommends and the car runs great now!
Anyhoo, as I was running the system I noticed that the hose that connects the swirl pot to the expansion tank was hissing and spitting. Felt the radiator and it was stone cold! The top of the swirl pot and the large hose going into it were red hot however. Could this be a thermostat issue or has the pump had it?
I let it cool down again but noticed there was no water in that top hose and the swirl pot was only half full (I filled it before starting work today). Ran the car again with the swirl pot plug off and couldn't see any water circulating.
Cheers

It could be the pump as the water has been pushed around the engine by the time it's coming into swirl pot then rad.
What did your temp gauge read when this was happening.
I'd first wait until it's fully cold and then leave expansion cap on tight and check level in swirl pot, it should be at the base of the threads or about 1/2 inch below.
What position was your heater control in, are you getting hot air from it. Could be thermostat or an airlock or water level very low.

The temp gauge was reading around 70-ish. I've no idea how accurate it is as it's only just been connected for the first time since owning it! The heater controls are in the middle on both, assuming it is even plumbed it! This car is full of surprises! What did your temp gauge read when this was happening.

Sounds like the water level is low, the pipe would be hot with steam.
I filled up the swirl pot before I started doing any work, but I now I think about it I had a little accident with the coolant last time I worked on it (it spurted everywhere!) so I wonder if I accidentally emptied the system. Guess that'll be the first thing to try! I was just worried with the top hose being toasty and the rad being clod.Cheers for the input chaps!

Turns out you were spot on! I though I only lost a bit when the system spurted it's load. It was more like 5 litres had gone!Re-filled, re-burped, left to get hot, fans kicked in so all looks well thank you!
