Hi there, just a minor emergency, can anyone advise?

Putting the wire back on properly should be ok - alternators do not like it one bit if they are run with the big thick wire disconnected (buggers up the rectifier diodes etc) but 9 times out of 10, losing the wee wire will do no lasting harm.

The battery is still charging etc, it's only the warning light (usually) that is affected. I don't have a wiring diagram for a Chim (is that what you said it was?) so don't know if it also works the voltage regulator circuit - probably not though.

Stick the wire back on, then use a voltmeter to check the max voltage across the battery (should be about 13.5 to 13.8 with engine running, after it has recovered and recharged from initial starter motor load). If that's ok then it's probably fine.

The really bloody annoying thing is that the weather is terrible. Why didn't it do it yesterday, I could have gone on a drive to recharge the battery.
