Requesting a registration number from DVLA Auctions

Hi all,
I requested a personalised registration number late last year through DVLA, and was made aware it has never been issued and therefore available for auction, should I wish.
A few weeks later I gave the green light for DVLA to do so, and when I asked when it would go to auction, I was given the vague response of "...due to the popularity of our auctions, I would not be able to advise you on a timescale for a registration to be selected for auction."
My question is, has anyone done this before, and if so what was the lead time between giving the go-ahead and it appearing in an auction?

I requested two number plates a few years ago, one was put into auction about 9 months later with a £700 start price, the other 2 years later at£495, now searching for the same plate with 1 digit different results in plates of £300....
One that was auctioned was via an online auction in a strange style I've not come across before whereby if someone else places a bid in the last 30min, the auction is extended by an hour. I made my first bid with less than 30min to go until the end of the auction. Four odd hours and a dozen bids later up to my max I eventually lost. There was only me and one other bidder involved.
3 years later, that plate is not listed on any MOT, insurance, tax , dvla/regtransfers databases.. so what happened to it?

I requested a plate about 18 months ago. It was not released in the following auction as they had already listed what was going to be sold but it was available in the auction after that so about 6 months after requesting release. Very pleased withe response. They were also very proactive in informing me as to when it was released and the auction it was going to be sold in. As I recall I think I almost weekly emails to remind me. It worked and I bought it at the auction. Aka, I often wonder the same thing. I've had a punt in a couple of the live DVLA auctions the past year or two. Both plates I lost are not registered on anything. One is on Regtransfers and the other seems to be in cyberspace. I have done this for 4 plates. Initially I requested 3 plates all along the lines of a similar theme. I received a response saying that the plates had not been previously released and would therefore be released via the auction process sometime in the future.
A year later after scouring each auction as they were announced but not seeing anything I made the request again and the first plate was released just a few months later. Then a few months after that another was released. I eventually got the third plate 2yrs after the first request and, funnily enough given the posts a few above this, it is for my young son so i'll retain it as long as I can off a car and will stick it on a car if i need to. He's got 10yrs to go before he's driving at least!
The final plate was another on the same theme as the first three and was auctioned about 5 months after I requested it.
All of the plates were comfortably under £1k other than my son's which I got into a bidding war on.
Overall it's a very straightforward and fair system. I think my first request for the 3 was likely lost in the system as my chaser got them moving.

The exact same thing happened to me, on more than one occasion. I genuinely believe they are being shill bid by the auction organisers to artificially increase the prices as the ones I’ve bid on (and MANY others that I have been very interested in) have never been put on vehicles or put up for sale. I’m now convinced that they push the price up and accidentally ‘win’ them. I can see them magically being back in the DVLA auctions years from now. I made enquiries earlier this year, was told it was available, it went into the November auction, I bid and secured it for a reasonable price, so it does work, up to the point that any auction works, i.e. when someone else with deeper pockets also wants it !
On the point of plates being purchased and not going on cars, as above, I bought a plate for my boy, and he is nowhere near driving age, so that is sat on a retention certificate, so it does happen.

I did this a couple of years ago. It was about 6-8 months I think.
Just bear in mind the reg number dealers will bid you up. My number plate couldn't possibly have any meaning to anyone else, it doesn't spell anything at all and isn't short or dateless but they still near enough doubled it in cost from the starting price.

I filled in an online form about a plate. They came back and asked me to confirm if I was definitely interested and, if so, they'd release it for sale. I went back and confirmed and they then came back and gave me a date and a time window during which it would be released for sale. It was up to me to check back on the appropriate day and buy it before anyone else had chance, which I did. It didn't go to auction.

I bought the plate for my daughter’s name before she was born. Shes is currently 10 and still a long way off using it.
