Track day help

Off for my first TVRCC track day in a couple of weeks at Snetterton. TVR Power checked the car over today, trying some helmets tomorrow, whick leaves me with one final worry - noise. The limit is stated as 105db's, and a bit of a search is putting Cerbies with sports pipes and cats still in place past that (108-120).

Anywhere in the northants region (or web) that I can buy/hire a quick bolt on fix?

The track day I did was at teeside autodrome and it was 105db limit, mine was 108db (sports pipes and cats)when they tested it but they still let me on.
I didn't rev it as high as 3/4 revs like they asked though during the test

Some tracks are very strict about it so if you can ever reduce the noise prior to getting there you could save yourself some grief.

I've never seen a noise meter at Snetterton mind you.

I've driven past noise meters on track days with no problems & thats with sports pipes, should'nt be an issue

Thanks all. Ill check out those ones on ebay. I assume they just hammer into to tubes which is quite neat.

Just got the helmet and a fancy set of boots too from Grand Prix Raceware. Might try them out on the way home, but expect Ill get a few funny looks going up the A5 with a helmet on in my Vectra!

We have been to Snetterton in the cerb for the last 3 years running & never had any problems, like Ted said I've never seen them check any car there.

Will be there this time if I can move my night shifts...

Well, he's going to feel a bit stupid if he turns up and gets to drive for 1 minute all day? Not great advice I feel!

I literally drove out the pitlane at Bedford and they waved the black flag at me - fortunately I was just filling in time between driving the TopCats race tuscan.
This was decat, but with extra silencers and sports pipes.

Someone I know with a Duratec Caterham was chucked off at Snett, so they *do* have a noise meter. He was probably over 110 though. I would get some bolt on Merlin silencers (Merlin Motorsports, Castle Combe) for some cheapish insurance.

It happens more and more all the time! I am currently limited to only a few tracks in this country until I can get an airbox - this is with a MONSTER silencer. Fortunately Snett should be one of them!

I've seen the fall off or get blown out - not only are you noisy again, but you could hit someone else's car. I strongly recommend you get bolt on versions!

On the contrary, that advice is based upon my personal experiences of tracking a Cerb with sports pipes at 6 different UK circuits over the last 3 years!

Your experiences will be different as your lack of a cat will make the car much louder

It's not worth the risk though is it? Noise limits come down every year. I had cats on some of the time, and while you might get away with static test, you certainly won't with the drive-by unless you lift carefully every time you pass a Mike.

If he is over 110, then you can still be kicked off at Snetterton.

I've got some ACT slip-on silencers for the Chim. Very good they are too and a steal at £60. Not sure if they fit the Cerb though.

The big problem in trying to guage 'am i too loud' proir to a track day, is the huge variance involved. The same type of car can vary immensely, the conditions on the day can play a part, the noise meter may well be un-maned.

On many occaisions i have found my Cerb to be way quieter than some of the louder machinery going round!

I am currently running with no cats, sports pipes & no supplementary silencers. We are at Donington next week so it should be interesting! ( i am taking some bolt-ons just in case)

If it's a usual 98 day, I predict you will fail the Donington noise test! They do not leave their meters unmanned - their wired up to the local council. Even on their 105 noisy day you're probably in trouble.

I recommend the ACT bolt on jobbies. I have a pair for my Chim 500, sports system, they make a huge difference. When I had it measured at Goodwood they knocked around 10db off. If memory serves they also fit the Cerb but I know they are available for Cerbs anyway. Check them out here www.actproducts.co.uk/trackdays.php

Did you just get yourself a standard bike helmet, or can you get hold of helmets with larger apertures for car driving?

I think its a car one although I could be wrong. I spotted a thread elsewhere on PH recommending the wider visor, so checked that my peripheral vision was not impared (for mirrors, blind spots, etc). I also made sure I tried a few for size and comfort. I think its quite good, but as this is my 1st helmet I may be talking rubbush. Bought some fancy boots too!

gpr do supertraps for 2" pipes for 40 quid, or bigger sizes for 60 quid. Ill check out the ACT site though as an alternative. Off to the garage to get a tape measure
