I was driving along the m54 in the early hours of the mornign (It was dark and slightly misty). There was no taffic on the road, and so I was going a fair rate. I noticed a police car parked up on one of those little ramps they have. I stamped on the brakes, and by the time I passed the car I was only doing 85. The cops pulled out after me, and caught me up pretty soon. They stayed on my tail for about a mile before dropping off.

Am I nicked?

I have heard of VASCAR, but in the dark would they have me on camera? why give chase withoput nicking me?

Why would they not bother to pull me over? would there be a chance that they had a camera or something. As I said previously it was dark and slightly misty.
Also, as I was doing well over a tonne when I saw them, wouldn't they at least pull the car over to check its not nicked?

They probably used ANPR to check that the car wasn't nicked and is insured, taxed etc

You're 95% free, you might want to do a search for "Xmas"... same thing happened to me on Christmas day when I was driving to nowhere at well over 100 mph.
Bright day and good visibility, completely empty motorway and I probably passed the guys at that speed.
Always check my mirrors and saw them with the sirens really far off in the distance, slammed on the breaks and trundled along at the speed limit and he eventually caught up.. followed me for a while up a slip road and drove off.
Never heard of it again.

They probably saw you speeding, but wanted to make sure you had seen them. Nothing seems to get a tug more than ignoring or not seeing a police car that is following you. If you see them, it is evidence that you are paying attention to the road rather and are less of a risk than someone who has a lead foot without the hawk vision that goes with it.

Complete Rubbish !!

I got sent a NIP a few years back now by Cambs. police after I knowingly passed an unmarked car at a speed they were not happy with

The witness statement said I was not stopped as the BIB had stopped someone else instead that was going faster than me.

I would say you have a 60% chance of getting away with it.
