Optican results

My daughter had her eyes tested at school and we had a letter saying we should make an appointment with an optician which we have already done.

The results were

Right 6/9.5. -1 and left 6 / 7.5 -3

What does this mean in simple terms ?

6/9.5 means she can see something at 6 foot what people with normal vision can see at 9.5 in the right eye and the left is 6/7.5

The minus number I believe just shows she is short sighted, the lower the number the worse the short sightedness, I think the extreme is -18.

The top number is the distance from the chart and the bottom number is the size of the smallest line of letters she can read. The -1 means she got one letter wrong on the line -3 means 3 wrong.
Normal average vision is usually taken as 6/6 (Americans work in feet at call it 20/20) so her vision is just slightly below average and her right eye is marginally worse than the left.
If it was a school screening I'm guessing that she is probably about 5, it can just be due to being unfamiliar with being tested .
Most younger children tend to be long sighted and if there is a difference between the 2 eyes it can lead to a squint or lazy eye if uncorrected.
Just to warn you don't be surprised if the optician uses drops(which do sting a bit), these will temporarily stop her focussing as often children are long sighted and focus to compensate for it.These can make things blurred for a few hours afterwards and also stop the pupils reacting to light so sunglasses can be helpful.
