An electric cooker... , there always wired straight to the mains in the kitchen with its own power switch/socket.
Is it possible to wire a cooker to a normal plug with a 13 amp fuse etc. ? I'm puting a cooker in my garage for heating up items for work related issues and I'm not allowed to use our 'good' cooker in the kitchen.

My cooker was supplied with a 13A plug. It's a Baumatic range cooker (only the oven is electric). The gas fitter who installed it mentioned that there is some point at which they can no longer use a standard plug and it must be hard wired into the 30A(?) circuit - can't remember exactly what the criteria are.

Very true. I recently had an electrician in the other day as I found our Stoves Electic Oven/Grill gas hob is wired on to the ring main via a 13amp plug. I thought it should have its own spur.
Turns out I was wrong, and some modern cookers can run off a 13amp plug. You need to look at the instruction book!
Most (if not all) modern standrad size fan ovens are 13amp. Certainly if they are built in with no/gas hob.
The extra current is needed for the electric rings (i.e old all electric cookers) or for non fan ovens.
When I got my kitchen gutted, I moved the (built in)oven into a reception room, and plugged it into a standard ring socket.
Best way is to check the rating of the oven (should be on the back) if it is more than 3120W (3.1kW) you will need a better cable run, and a dedicated trip from the supply.

Most cooker/ hob combos are rated at around 7kw/ 23A, which is why they are wired on a individual supply using 6mm cable. Standard ring main is 2.5mm.
Modern ovens are rated around 3kw which would be fine for a 13A ring main.
So it depends if you mean cooker or oven?

Just checked the back of it,max load is 8.3 kw !!
the 4 rings will never,ever,be on..just the oven,if the worst comes to the worst,the 13amp fuse will blow ?,or the trip fuse in the house for the garage will trigger.. ?
or I could wire it up to a lampost
if there is a fuse,ultimately it will be safe,no ? .. I havent a clue..
The fan ovens draw less than 13A (2.5kw rings a bell).
It is the hob that takes the lion's share of the power - typically around 7kw.
So if it is only an oven you intend installing, you should be fine on 13A.
Incidentally, a gas hob is rated at more like 14kw, which is why they are so much more effective.

13 amp fuses are notoriously inaccurate. It's entirely possible to damage a socket by overheating due to too much current being drawn without blowing the 13A fuse. OTOH it's easy to disconnect the rings so only the oven bit works. That will also save you from accidentally roasting things you put down on the hob
