I've read the BT thread , does anyone have any practical experience of sharing a connection on Telewest's Blueyonder ?

I tried a D-Link product a while back , and even had a pro network engineer come round . He spent 12 hours trying to get it to work but to no avail .Can anyone tell me the exact products that I need ? (Blueyonder restricts access to pre-registered MAC addresses and they don't sanction internet sharing AFAIK )

BY no longer require mac addresses.

I would suggest a look at byusers.com, there are plenty of helpful souls over there

We share a Blueyonder connection via Netgear WG624 wireless router.
I simply loaded the software on the PC & the laptop from the CD supplied and used the same Blueyonder access codes with no problems.

we were advised that they don't officially support this but that there is nothing to stop you doing it. The engineer who fitted our line said the same thing.

Hope this helps.

How many PCs?

You could simply peer-to-peer network two machines and use Internet Connection Sharing. Remember to use a cross-over network cable when not going via hub/router.

Simple but I've used it with no problems for customers with just two machines on BY.

...and yes, I can confirm that BY no longer require MAC addresses (that used to be a right pain in the proverbial)

I've got eight PCs on 4Mbit BY using ICS and it works great

The only problem is you've got to have the ICS machine on first.

Yeah , I'm only connecting two PC's at mo. Probably sounds that if this MAC address thing has been revoked , if I do what was done last time it would all work ?

Yup!

Network the two machines together using a cross-over cable. The machine with the Internet connection obviously needs to be on all the time but that's the only drawback.

You need ICS on the machines so they share the connection between them but it actually works quite well. What OS are you using & I'm sure someone'll give a blow-by-blow account of how to set it up. Or try here... www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics

Cheers.

Correct, you connect both PCs to the router and it handles the connections, so you don't need ICS.

Sorted ! For archive's sake , anyone doing this in the future ,when the Netgear wizard asks you if your connection is >computer > cable > modem > internet , make sure you are connected through the ethernet card and NOT the USB

Not sure what steps to take securitywise tho' ?
I seem to have picked up half the street , which I would imagine is common. What issues does this raise ?

By the way , Frenchtvr , if you mailed me on my Folkard account it ain't working at the mo. Did you get one from me on that account ?
