It had to happen in Edinburgh. Not sure how this works on a 30 MPH limit with traffic lights.

They've just installed Ave Speed ones in Brighton along Marine Parade from the Pier to the marina.

Theyre installed in Annesley near J27 of the M1. It just means there is a constant stream of traffic making it impossible for pedestrians to cross the road or for drivers to join from side roads.

I'm pretty certain Bedford and the outer lying villages have them planted.

We have some of those down a couple of roads in Gloucester. One road is a really long straight road through a residential area

They just replaced the classic ones on the M4 when arriving from the West into London by average speed cameras.

They've got them along the road by the Land Rover factory (Lode Lane) in Solihull.

Set to be raking in millions it seems. Still, the children and kittens will be safe

And people will still brake as they pass them, like they do on the M60 / M62 round my way.

What part of the word 'average' do people not understand?

So either the drivers in Britain are very bad and like to be seen as children AND at the same time the drivers in Germany are seen as real professionals... Or someone-somewhere is trying to make money by threatening and frightening people that speed kills on motorways...

Personally I do not think speed should be limited on motorways unless it is in a dangerous area...

am I still on Pistonheads?

It's Germany that is the exception rather than the rule & even there not all their motorway is de-restricted. It's gradually getting more areas with full time limits (depends on the particular region & it's political landscape).

Does not sound like a difficult technical change to cover both though - not sure what is preventing them from doing so to get even more results?

I can vouch for this, I wouldn't mind so much if they used them on the red routes with a high death/accident rate. The joke is however, they are on the dual-carriage way leading up to the red routes/high accident areas then, because there isn't as much money to be made, they stop and there's nothing at all around the accident blackspots.

Had some in Plymouth for many years on a bit of road where two teenagers died after their stolen Nova hit a wall. Because if the speed camera was there that stolen car definitely would have slowed down.

Here's an example of how things are going. New road,no accident information, but speed limit to be set 20mph below the legal requiremnet. Council wants to enforce the limit with average speed cameras and are awaiting Police "corroborative accident information". Sensor pads already installed, money already put aside.

"Proposing the 50mph speed limit, David Whitton, Chief Officer for Highways, Infrastructure Development and Waste, said: "The proposed road geometry and road environment will give the driver the feeling that driving in excess of 50mph is not appropriate...""

"...the average speed on the new South Devon Highway is 66mph - well above the 50mph speed limit."
