I have a 997 S and it needs a NSF bump stop as this was brought to my attention on an inspection.

Having called a local specialist they said its around £120 supply & fit but its extremely likely that the top mount has welded it self to the shock absorber (or to that affect) and due to it having PASM a new shock absorber would be advised plus top mount then bump stop at a price of approx £600-700 per side (doing the other side is advisable he said).

Has anyone been in a similar predicament where you have had to replace the lot?

Speak to David Masters at Bilstein UK to establish whether the standard dampers can be rebuilt :

This thread would seem to indicate that the damper rod becoming seized into the top mount isn't uncommon :

and that the front dampers can't be refurbished ......

I replaced the top mounts on my PASM equipped Cayman recently. One of the damper rods was seized into the top mount bush. I managed to drift it out using a steel tube over the top nut with the PASM cable poking up the tube to protect it from the mallet blows on the end of the tube. The steel tube inside diameter was sufficient to clear the flats on the nut but allowed the end of the tube to sit on the nut's integral washer. I supported the strut using a couple of steel bars underneath the lower side of the top mount, with the steel bars supported in a Workmate bench.

Supporting the top mount in this way was easy as the spring was broken on the seized side, giving plenty of clearance It would have been trickier with the spring intact.

Thanks guys. I will take the car in for the bump stop in a couple of weeks, worst case it needs shock absorbers I will call the above for a rebuild rather than new parts smile
