It has been stated in the press and online that there is the possibility of a F1 team being able to use Mercedes engines in 2018 due to Manor disappearing. This was highlighted by the fact McLaren were supposed to have contacted Mercedes due to the issues with Honda.

Now that Sauber have decided to ditch the Ferrari engine for 2018 in favour of the works Honda unit could we see another team in the F1 paddock making a call to Ferrari to ask for a customer engine?

Clearly so far in 2018 the Ferrari unit has made great strides in performance and would be a great asset in the back of another F1 car for 2018.

Thoughts?

This season Sauber are the only team using a 2016 engine. I doubt Ferrari have any particular appetite to supply last year's unit in future.

As much as I'd like to see more entries in future I don't think the availability of customer engines is a limiting factor, In fact all manufacturers are obliged, if required, to supply an additional team (after Red Bull almost fell out of bed with Renault in '15/16).

With the demise of Manor, Mercedes I am sure would be quite keen to gain another customer.
