Just about a "law" topic so I've put it here.

I recently bought a 1975 bike, got it MOTd and thought I'd take advantage of the free VED, because

You must get an MOT, but don’t have to pay vehicle tax from 1 April 2017.
So I happily filled in the online form, only to be taken to a payment page. So I investigated a bit further, and it seems that I have to take all my documentation to a post office (old skool) and pay them £25 for the privilege of being told that I don't have to pay VED any more.

I thought eligibility was automatic if the age was correct? I have a 1960 bike and I never had to register that, unless of course the previous owner did so.

Is this all correct?

Yes, of course any opportunity to take a fee off you.

Its quite a while since I had to do this, there were even regional DVLA centres you could go to then.

Is a one off fee to reclassify the vehicle class as historic.

Once all the details have been checked, a new V5 will be issued, I'm not sure if you have to wait until its issued before you can pay your £0.

I recently bought a car that the owner was paying tax for that qualified to be changed to historic, took papers to post office, nothing payable, all changed.

£25 is news to me.

£25 sounds suspiciously like the V62 fee for replacing a lost V5C...

And, sure enough...

To qualify for the historic tax your vehicle has to be in that vehicle tax class in the same way if you buy a disabled car you have to change it to petrol or diesel. Once changed you will get it free, but having said that I've never had to pay £25 to change it, I've only paid £25 if I have not been in receipt of the most recent V5C which is what your charge might be for.

Ah sorry, greater minds have spoken. No fee then.

I'll crawl back under my rock.

Thanks all. I've just re-read it and yes, I see now that the £25 is only if I don't have the V5 and need a replacement.

Unfortunate that the V5 has already been sent off so I can't start the process until I get it back in my name (doesn't look like you can use the V5C). So if I want to use it in the ,meantime I'll have to stump up for tax, but I can do that on a direct debit so it'll only cost me £7 a month until I get the V5 changed.

Why in this day and age with vehicle recognition etc picking cars up for no tax, insurance etc instantly that when it comes to a vehicle eligible for historic tax there's a load of flaffing about. Is it because it's free DVLA want to be as awkward as they can?

I guess DVLA assume such vehicles are not used daily so can be stored pending completion of the process. Tough if you have nowhere off the road to put it though, or use it to travel to work.

It's not THAT big a faff.

You just tax it in the PO, in the same way as you would normally if you didn't do online - they tax it free, keep the V5C, and you get one back that says "Historic" instead.

IMO - It is - Some people just do not have immediate access to a PO. We should be able to do this on line without a doubt.

Dear god, what the matter with you? Just one tiny little hoop and you're moaning! Would you be happier if they came round your house and did it for you?

You're the one saying that a simple, one time only bit of admin that's to your benefit is a big faff and you tell me to get a grip!

No, I was saying that we should be able to do it online. That is all. Nothing too hard to sort surely?

Christ - No wonder there are so many stupid arguments on here!

I received about eleventy emails saying there were replies to my thread and couldn't imagine what they were about given that it was answered in the first 4 or 5 posts - should have known, new post = argument potential!

At the risk of perpetuating a stupid argument, 2CV said it wasn't THAT much of a faff, then you replied IMO it is.

Don't worry, it's just the people booked on a course of 10 arguments getting their moneys worth.

And you're never, ever anywhere near any kind of urban conglomeration large enough to have a PO? Where the hell do you live, Atlantis?
