I've never been on a proper luxury sleeper, but did take a nice cabin in the overnight Calais > Nice > Calais car-train for our honeymoon en route to Corsica back in 2003. The shake, rattle and roll of the carriage wheels, tracks, junctions etc. didn't make for a particularly good night's sleep!
Still it was well worth it in the end...

Definitely windscreen wipers on the first picture on this page, they are a little blended in with the dark window but can see the stalks of them, slightly below centre.

Japan isnt too expensive really, a flight will cost from £410-700 on average, hotel rooms away from Tokyo around £100 per night for something you would want to stay in. Food can be cheap if you dont go tourist japanese places and lots of bakeries for lunch. Railpass for a fortnight i think is around £250-300 each. I'd like to do Japan on holiday but its just the fact it's so alien to us language wise and expensive puts me off. Speaking as a typical Brit if you know what I mean.
Added up you could do a wonderful two week tour for less than £3000 plus food and drinks which can easily be spent on a generic trip to a nice enough place in Europe.
Not knocking going to Europe but just ahowing it doesnt have to be mega bucks.

We did Japan last October, most amazing place I've ever been and I think we only scraped the surface. You won't have much of an issue in the cities everything is in English also, plus there's plenty of Western food. Once you get out of the cities/tourist areas becomes interesting with the language. I'd like to do Japan on holiday but its just the fact it's so alien to us language wise and expensive puts me off. Speaking as a typical Brit if you know what I mean.
Can't wait to go back.

£3k for a fortnight (per couple or per person?) might not be mega bucks to you, but it's not really what most folk would call an affordable holiday.Would love to go there though, always been curious about the country and it's culture.

Would be around £3k per couple, im not so sheltered that i dont understand that this is a lot of money to most but if its someones dream location then i was trying to show its not massively out of bounds especially when you consider that a holiday in Spain i would guess would be a minimum of £800 for two. There appears to be an observation car/deck at both ends, if you notice one has a long sofa the other has armchairs. I believe the driver sits just in font of the observation area at the front, but slightly lower. chrisgtx said:

Just to add what others have already said, as long as you have roaming on your phone you can navigate anywhere even the trains using Google Maps. We didn't get lost once in 2 weeks of travelling. The train looks to be fantastic but with the Bullet train I can't see you needing to be on the train long enough to make it worth sleeping on? When we went we tried to get a sleeper service just to try it but none of the routes are long enough to make it worth while. Standard class is so good we didn't even bother paying for Green class (first class) when we bought our train pass for the fortnight.
