Just moved into a new place; my bedroom TV (5yo basic Samsung panel) is hooked up to my old Sony home cinema 5.1 system; hdmi from the Sony to the TV for films etc, and an optical cable from the TV to the Sony so I can use the 5.1 speakers for TV broadcasts. The TV signal was weak so I bought a booster; said booster is plugged into one sockets on the wall; the other socket has a 4-plug extension on it where the TV, Song, Fire Stick and a light are plugged in. The aerial cable goes straight into the TV.

When I switch only the TV on I get a full array of tv channels; however if I switch the AV unit on for superior sound, I lose around 75% of the channels, with only the 5 main HD channels remaining. Switch the AV unit off and all the channels return.

I thought maybe it was something to do with power draw from the socket (unlikely, but the easiest thing to check first) so I plugged the AV unit into another socket, but still the same issue. My only other thought is that some kind of RF signal from my AV is messing with the tv broadcast signal, but I can't work out how to solve this - any ideas? It's an old (maybe 8-9 years) AV unit and doesn't have wireless or anything else that should be broadcasting out from it - truly stumped as to what is going on.

Run separate feeds from source to TV for video, second feed from source to AV amp for audio.

What is the quality of the aerial lead you have running both to the amp and from the amp to the tv.

Sounds like interference to me.

I have similar issues with my Apple TV cutting the signal when it's turned on.
Upgraded all the aerial leads to WF100 and still no better.

Vex: just standard cables bought off Amazon; sealed (i.e. not a home-made job with connects jammed onto random coax cable).

legzr1: not sure what you mean? The source here is the aerial which goes straight to the TV; interference is only happening when I switch on the AV unit to get better sound via the optical cable.

It's not a huge issue; rarely watch any of the smaller tv channels in that room anyway - just a bit annoying.

Does the av receiver not have a socket in the back that you can plug your TV ariel into?

Nope; that was my first thought too. It's not an AV receiver per se, it's a home cinema system so less functions.

Still seems like interference to me, just because the cables are bought from amazon, doesnt mean they are any good.

You need RG6 with 95% braid, QuadShield, or in the UK we use WF100, which is a copper tape and 95% braid.

Alternatively it could be an earthing issue, but in theory that would always be there regardless of it the AVR unit is on or not.

Forget my first post, I totally missed the word 'aerial' and presumed the issue was the amp not receiving or processing certain channels from Sky/set top box (the 'source').

As Vex has said, sounds like interference - been years since I used a booster box but I remember them being very fickle things - take it out of the loop and try aerial direct to TV then turn on your amp. Even a poor signal should rule out the booster box - if all channels are now available (albeit poor quality) then you've found the fault.

Hi, I have this exact issue, did you manage to fix it? Thanks
