Running a cheap second car thats PH worthy on a budget.
Discussion
Evening fellow Phers!
My current Bmw e61 530D is in for repair (torque converter)and will need some more time off road in the near future.
My car meets all my needs , is reasonabley quick - enough to cause smiles on the back roads anyhow ( appreciate many of you wont agree with me on this one lol) and in estate form is reasonably practical.
I have always hankered for something cheap, chuckable and another hot hatch or slightly impractical car would suit perfectly.
In the past iv ran a 206 gti , and a 306 hdi all as second cars as they practically paid for themselves when saving on fuel and maintenance when running an e36 M3 Evo. I managed to get dirt cheap insurance for these cars and enjoyed there ownership. Both carswere under 1k and come re sale time proved very good bangernomics.
Im in the market now for something similar, so far iv looked at mx5's , pumas , even an early Audi TT and whats putting me off is the insurance.
None of the above quite meet classic car status for the insurance and so come in at around £1200 to insure with 0 ncb's as its all tied to the Bmw.
So its over to you guys for recommendations for a nice cheap car, maybe even a classic with a little bit of fun on offer for little cash.
Id also like to hear what you guys run for smiles per gallon.
Thanks
Col.

Like the idea of the mr2 although getting a little pricey for a nice one.
A Clio 172 would have in a shot however they didn't do me a decent quote .
I'd definitely shop around though. I'm 39 , 17 years ncb but live in Manchester which goes against getting a nice quote .
For less than £300 on a Clio cup I'd buy one tomorrow ha ha.

You should be able to get your bonus mirrored on to a second policy. You will need to ring around some of your local brokers but its very doable. The big players and the online companies dont facilitate it.We did it last year to put a Boxster on the road for us as a weekend car.

Not sure if they'll cover a non NI address, but cant think why they wouldnt. They definitely do mirrored bonus. Any local brokers to you might be worth a ring too though.
For your own insurance, i follow the checking order described over on MSE
