Is this realistic?

Elderly (100+) golden retriever who jus plods about he house and garden enjoying the sunshine but has very dodgy back legs (Cruikshank/arthritis).

Other going back to the vet can we buy anything off the shelf for her? We're beyond joint care tablets etc. She's already lost quite a bit of weight and mobile once she gets going but can't go more than 100-150m and really clicks and struggles first thing.

She loves massages but can't do that every day at 5:30am before breakfast for her.

Just want to make her life a bit easier.

Thanks

Potentially paracetamol but you would need to see vet first as doses are different in dogs than humans. It also has very little anti inflammatory affect so will not help with this.

Why do you not want to see the vet? They can offer some excellent pain relief anti inflammatory meds that could make her a lot more comfortable or have you already tried them?

Maybe go back to the vet, my old dog had cartophen injections which helped. A lot of other retriever owners use turmeric paste (there's a group on FB where you can ask for advice and information). Good luck

I had the same dilemma but the vets visit was worthwhile. My elderly collie (17.5 years) has been on rymadyl for quite some time and it's definately helped.

A heated pad would keep her more comfortable at night when the house is cold.

We have one of these tucked underneath a blanket on the sofa:

Cartrophen was a massive help for my poor old GSD in her later years. I don't recall it being that expensive?

These are ok as long as you don't have an animal that is a) not sensitive to the heat pad or b) not able to move off the heat source easily when necessary to prevent contact burns

Our Old English Sheepdog was prescribed metacam as pain relief for his arthritic back legs by our local vet and then we bought it on line far cheaper than the vet's prices.

Definitely helped him in his latter years

I've read lots about Turmeric recently - Do some reading, I found it very interesting. (Also search Golden Paste)
