Something a bit different
Discussion
Been looking for a new car with around 250-300 bhp. Ideally I'd like to stay away from the 2.0 4 pot engines because they just don't do anything for me in terms of being special nor do I want a FWD. I like various versions of the 3.0 straight six in the BMW's. But I was just wondering what people could suggest.
Hatchback and coupé would be ideal with a budget of up to £10,000. It sounds very picky but I'd like something a bit different from the norm.

I think you'd struggle to find a hatch that doesn't have a 2.0 turbo engine other than maybe an R32 Golf?
There's plenty of German metal out there with a V6/V8 engine for that kind of money but they'll be car that aren't necessarily really fast. I'm a Merc fan and there's plenty of V engined ones about such as an E500 or CLS500. Depends what kind of thing you like OP.

That's the problem so many have that engine. It's a solid platform but just doesn't seem all that special. Those big mercs may not be insurable with me being 20. I could insure a 350z but that's probably as big an engine I could go. I'm more of a BMW fan myself coming from a 1 series

I've had a look at those and do like them but I've heard that they can have some sort of engine issues?
They are pretty reliable if looked after. I think the 06 facelift model before the 07 facelift may had had some oil useage issues, but otherwise think they are solid engines. My 2004 one was very reliable.Worth looking at a 130i hatch?

I do hardly any miles seeing as my daily commute is by train so I think i should be able to keep a 350z in pretty good condition in terms of general wear and tear. The other car I've been looking at is a z4 3.0 coupe. So 350z vs z4?

The Alfa is a good shout but you have that Italian reliability. I've had quotes for the jag and they are ridiculously expensive.
There are loads of BMW's around the UK but i personally don't see many z4 coupes or any of the others with a higher performance like the 335i.
I don't think the Alfa reliability thing is really all that tbh. Just media hyperbole for the most part. Look at any reliability survey and you'll see last place is never actually many points behind first place. Only these survey's force a list view, so it makes it look like an Everest between top and bottom. There are loads of BMW's around the UK but i personally don't see many z4 coupes or any of the others with a higher performance like the 335i.
I do agree the Z4 coupe is a lot more rare and dare I say it, an incredibly good looking car too. I'd pick one over a 350z, although I do like the 370z, but probably out of budget.
That said, if you really are doing hardly any miles, how about something that is really different to the norm?

£10k should get you one. Ok it's not a coupe or a hatch, but it is very cool, exhilarating and awesome. Also very simple to work on as they are mostly Ford and Rover under the body (depending on year).
