FYI People.

********************************
This is an announcement for all Windows 2003 Customers.

Microsoft today announced the Release to Manufacture (RTM) of Windows 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Microsoft Says:

It (SP1) is designed to "effectively reduce the attack surface of Windows Server 2003, protect system services with stronger default settings and reduce server privileges".

Citing security concerns, Microsoft recommends customers start evaluating SP1 as soon as possible, with a view to near-term deployment.

forgot to mention size.. I forget dialup still exists

I've stuck it on a Dev box I have, went on without issue, seems stable so far.

I always test patches before we mail out clients, i've had this one installed for a while (Was on Beta Team), but as always, test on a development environment before promoting to live.

Enjoy

I'm sure it will break something

We used to look forward to MS SP release dates with utter dread when I was at Veritas!

It seems to have broken Avast Server edition for me.

It is not recommended to install SP1 to SBS2003 servers, even though they are based on Server 2003 and Windows Update did (doesn't now) pick it up.

Don't ask me how I know

WU didn't pick up SP1 here, just a list of patches as long as your arm. I said "OK" and almost immediately it spazzed up a driver and crashed the system. Oh good.

Anyone? Helloooooo out there? I refuse to be the Guinea Pig for this as I have just recovered a half gigabyte of mail from my conversion from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003 (changed the Domain Model, created a fresh AD which meant new users, different topology, changed the name on the email server - pretty much did everything I wasn't supposed to do).

By the way - off topic - big recommendation for the folks at www.pcrecovery.com/

Their Exchange store recovery software is the proverbial business...

I am going to apply it to a non-crucial server first and see how it goes after some testing.
