I've had this little chap for a few years now but looks like it might be time to say our sad farewells.

Plugged it in the other day and motor just "hummed" . trying to start against load I thought so emptied the tank. started this time but motor slowed until it stalled as pressure built up.

Not convinced it was the problem, but they're cheap enough, so I changed the unloader... no difference irked

Capacitor "looks" ok, not burnt, swollen or anything, but anyway that only gets it going doesn't it?

Not delved into the motor but no obvious smells of burning.

Any ideas or should I accept its been fun but time to say goodbye.

Do you know what type of motor it is? If it's a split phase motor it would have two windings and some sort of thermal/centrefugal switch which might have failed. If it's a capacitor motor, a failed capacitor would fit the symptoms too.

If you know the motor type, size and rating it might be more cost effective to replace it rather than try to diagnose / pay for somebody to diagnose it since this also addresses all the usual mechanical wear issues.

Here's a look inside, straight forward capacitor start single phase motor?

All looks well, no sign (or smell) of burning, with capacitor disconnected it won't start at all so guess capacitor is ok, or at least doing something?

Replacement motor is not really an option as the casing is common to the compressor end. Guess it's time to chuck it.... just frustrating not seeing anything wrong irked

Yes with the guard off I can turn the fan quite easily, it will run "fine" with the drain tap open!
