Filter upgrade to P series
Discussion
I want to get a bigger filter system than my current coking p series. Most pictures I take are whilst away so uses a 24-105 a lot of the time. I have a real ultrawide too but it has no thread so don't need a system to suit that. If I use a polariser or even just use the p series as it i have to use at least 38mm or longer to avoid the hood creeping in. I'm sure plenty of people have come across this but recommendation would be a real help. I looked at the cokin x-pro but some of the filter prices were mental like £350 a peice
They do look good but they really add up don't they! Just looking at the catalog I end up wanting 20 of them. I need to be more ruthless. I have always fixed a lot in post so prioritizing exposure with some medium edge grads for now seems like the way to go. Is the holder worth it as you seem to be able to get a 100mm third party holder for much less.

The quality of the Lee holder over the cokin is quite impressive and I'm not sure why I didn't go lee from the off. However it is expensive so just purchase a filter here and there and build your collection. You shouldn't need too many if it's just for landscapes - maybe just a .6 or .9 grad which can also double up as an ND if you push it right down. If it was me I'd get the .9.
I have the Lee holder so I can't comment on the third party systems, sorry. They are so cheap you are not risking a lot mind so maybe worth a go...

I have a huge 100mm Lee setup, its also worth looking at Nisi.
I prefer the lee over nisi becuse the nisi system can be fiddly but the CPL works better
100mm is good for 16mm on full frame, anything wider or with a bulbous front element (14-24, 11-24 etc) will need 150=170mm
Nisi 10 stop is more neutral than lee. Nisi are 2mm thick glass vs 4mm resin (or glass) of lee.
You can mostly get away with grads by blending but I still use them.

Thanks for the info guys. To be fair I mainly used the 0.9 with the cokin system too so that's a very fair point. I have a 16mm and full frame but that has a bulbous element so no thread so don't need a system to suit that. I think I'd prefer The lee with that information. Although the glass may be more scratch resistant I'd be worried about snapping them in a travel environment.
I went a bit overboard in the end as the reason I'm looking to upgrade is a trip to Canada in August. I went for the Nisi system and its a real peach and lovely to use. I went for the beginner kit as I love a slow image with no cast unlike my hoya pro 1000nd I also picked up a 16-35 from ebay and I'll sell my Tokina. I had a play the other day and despite the rather rough edit (there are a number of bits in this that bug me) I'm pleased with the results and looking forward to using both more.
