Guys, I am torn between the following cars. I want one for 6 to 12 months, depending on how long it takes for me to save up for an F10 M5.

1) Saab 9-3 2.8V6 Turbo
2) Vauxhall Vectra VXR
3) Renault Megane RenaultSport
4) Skoda Octavia vRS Mk2 2.0 Turbo
5) Subaru Impreza WRX

Mrs AD doesn't like the Saab or the Impreza.

Cheers!

Depends on what you're looking for.

The VXR could be considered a decent car, but I drove one and didn't like it

Scratch that WRX itch! Perfect timeframe to own a car like that. ie. short enough to put up with the now bad image they have, but long enough to experience how great they are.

I'd go for the Megane, a fun fast car without too much of a bad image

Keep what you already have if possible. You will be able to save up quicker.

Go for the VXR, the Megane would be the sensible choice but hell after the M5 the VXR will be fun & a bit different.

Or depending on your budget:

2010 Insignia VXR 69k

There's one on AT with higher miles but the chain has been done.

The Insignia is out of my price range and the rear diff is a worry. Front Brakes are expensive too.

I've seen that one 85k on the clock?

I didn't think all Insignia VXR's were 4x4 as only the later ones state to be 4x4

I bought one and thought it was horrible, so your experience may vary.

Octavia VRS would be brisk and should be largely fuss free to drive, so could be the sensible choice. I had a Leon with the same engine/chassis/gearbox and it was rapid (with a remap) and oh so easy to drive quickly, but a little short on excitement.

VXR ventral got a bad rep but is supposed to be a good steer on the road. The Saab is, I can only lye imagine, an AWD version of the Vectra. I would probably want the saab, but I'm not sure that it would not be a money pit either.

Sensible advice? Get a cheap runaround and get the M5 quicker.

I want a newer car, hence the requirement of an F10. I love the look of the E39, but rust and other things is starting to get tiring. Supercharging them can be a bit hit and miss as well.

Exactly, spend the least amount now and put more towards the F10 M5. Either keep the e39 to tide you over or buy a shed for 6 months. Then you get the F10 M5 sooner.

It'll probably end up being 12 months. Shedding can be more expensive as well, my Audi A4 was a shed, and that cost me a fortune frown
