DC2 temp gauge - is this normal?

So I just bought a DC2 and noticed something strange. If I let the car idle when hot, the temp gauge sits just below half and never goes higher.
The fan kicks in as expected.

However, as soon as I start driving above 40-50mph the temp drops to just above C (see picture below). Is it normal to have this much fluctuation?



FWIW, the hot air blows fine and it doesn't seem to lose coolant. Although it does take about 10-15 minutes for the temp gauge to start coming up.

Your thermostat is fked.

Pretty common in the B series and dead easy to change.

Seconded, it should stay just under half regardless of speed, temps, traffic etc.

Thanks chaps. It's going for a full check later this week, will get the stat changed at the same time.

Had the same and it happened that the thermostat was dead (I installed a mishimoto - easy to do and it is working fine now).

Recently swapped mine out on my DC2 as a precaution.

Temp should always sit rock steady just below half. They always warm up pretty quickly too
