OK. This may be a silly questions, but after lots of thinking I have decided that my S3 battery will be placed in the boot, not under the bonnet. So my silly question is "does it matter which side it goes?" I'm tempted to put it on the passenger side (V8s is on the drivers, IIRC) which I know is closer to the petrol pipes, but otherwise cannot see why not. Am I missing something obvious?
Also, I'm thinking a battery of 60Ah and about 300A cranking current should be ok.
Any thoughts folks?
Cheers. Tony.

I have mine in the boot ut on the drivers side - For weight distribution it should really be in the passenger side. For safety if it is a wet battery put in a plastic box (motorsport places sell them) or a modern gell battery and just a top cover would be fine.

If you're sticking with a "full size" battery I don't see how it will fit on the left if you carry a space saver?

I located mine on the right, space saver is on original mounting and roof panels still fit in. Maybe not ideal weight distribution (it's on the right originally at the front) but I make allowances in my braking and cornering speeds for the imbalance ........... whistle

If you're going for a clever dicky little race type battery that will you a few more location choices ?

Thanks Mike M and Mike P
It was the weight distribution that prompted me to look at the passenger side, and I don't have any bracket for the space saver. Presumably I could locate that elsewhere but then weight is probably redistributed again! I'm probably going with a standard sized battery at this stage of thinking. It's just that the starter and fuse box is on the drivers side, so slightly shorter, longer, cables perhaps smile

Didn't the V8S have the battery in the boot?

If it doesn't matter which side you fit it to, I recommend you fit it to the side that gives the shortest run to the starter motor

Use, that's part of the plan. I think I need to trial fit spare, targa tops and battery to be sure. If I can get everything in with the battery on the passenger side, I think I may have a plan. Thanks for the help guys.
Tony.

most modern cars don't have spare wheels - just can and pump. Chances of a puncture are slim - when did you last have one that couldn't be fixed with a can of stuff?

also where would you put the punctured full size wheel/tyre?

a) why bother?
b) it takes up a useful space in the boot and leaves a useless hole under the bonnet
c) more cable lengths
d) you have to be certain of emergency boot release if the battery goes flat

It would not make much difference to weight distribution on my car if you saw the amount of stuff in the boot and not much if you dispensed with the spare wheel.

Just interested to know why people spend the time on this mod.

Yes, It's earthed directly to the chassis immediately underneath it, and the main power cable goes forward to the starter solenoid, which is used as a distribution point for the rest of the car. Worth using a big cable since it's a long run.

The point about opening the boot with a flat battery is a good one. It's worth making sure that you can get at the mechanical release just in case, but in practice I've always been able to jumper power to the main power terminal on the alternator with ignition on and the boot release pressed.

Leaves room for remote oil filter/cooler

Spare little corner, I don't miss it

Yes, but the S is not a very big car so still only a couple of metres, not a problem (I used 35mm cable)

I have secret cable release or can jump power onto alternator terminal

Because we can ....

It is just my opinion but I think the battery looks a proper"after thought" stuck up in the air on a hotch potch bracket right down the front smile

The main reason for me relocating the battery is that my posh new exhaust system takes up part of the usual space for the tray under the bonnet. It is 'just' still possible to put there but the boot is an obvious option - plus, I would need to make a new battery tray anyway.
Interestingly, the racing driver instructor at Blyton Park (shameless plug for upcoming track day on 16 June wink ) insists from a weight distribution point of view it is best in the front over the wheels.
All good food for thought!

Drivers side in the boot as well, ran 70mm sq cables to the front, ran both live and ground, put a ground to the chassis front passengers side and one to the rear chassis just under the battery. Just bolted a 10mm exhaust bobbin to the engine bay for the live pick up point. Engine gets a solid ground to the cable.

I'm with you on this one. Can't see the logic, personally. Unless you HAVE to move it because you need the space for a turbocharger, or something!

The battery is kept much cooler by fitting it in the boot and will last longer

I'll have a go at mocking up later today. I pretty well have to move the battery somewhere because of the exhaust being in the way so the boot is better than the later TVR approach of passenger footwell in my view. The passenger side of the boot has less room between tank and side of body so it may be tight, but worth looking at.

You could use 2 smaller 6 Volt batteries fitting them apart from eachother and get more AMPS PH as a bonus
