TRAVELLERS are being handed free CDs telling them what to do if they feel harassed or discriminated against.
Police are distributing thousands of the CDs around travelling communities in Peterborough, including the two main sites at Oxney Road and Norwood Lane, and throughout Cambridgeshire.
The £10,000 scheme is being launched by Cambridgeshire police in a bid to encourage travellers to report discrimination.
Police estimate 68 per cent of travellers have been victims of racial discrimination this year.
The audio CD is called Del gavvers pukker-cheerus, a Romany phrase meaning "give the police a chance" and was funded from Home Office money.
Some 2,000 copies of the disc are being distributed to travellers in the county.
A further 500 are being given to Cambridgeshire officers to make them aware of its contents.
It is the first scheme of it kind, but other police forces are already interested in distributing copies.
Cambridgeshire police hate crime manager Sgt Vic Galpin said: "People see a lot of negative publicity about travellers and very little about their plight.
"We spoke to young gypsies and travellers across Cambridgeshire and 68 per cent had suffered some form of racist discrimination in the recent past, but none said they would go to the police because they thought they would side against them.
"We are trying to address this and break down some barriers."
The CD is narrated by Romany journalist Jake Bowers and includes an interview with Chief Supt Simon Edens, commander of Cambridgeshire's Central Division.
There are also comments and interviews with travellers – giving their experiences of racism from members of the public.
Irish folk singer Christy Moore also gave permission for the use of his song, Go Move Shift, which highlights discrimination against travellers.
Karen Cornish, a spokesman for Peterborough City Council said: "Although the council has yet to hear the CD, we welcome anything which makes it easier for people to report crime and discrimination."

Sometimes I really feel like weeping...I really do.
So 68% of pikey's say they have suffered discrimination?
Good. They fully deserve it.
My heart bleeds for them.
And besides, do the idiots who think up these kinds of schemes to waste taxpayers money really think they will get an honest answer from these people?
Don't make me laugh.

Bit harsh tarring everybody with the same brush, guys.
I went to school with a family of tavellers and, slightly excitable son aside, they were a nice enough bunch. Remember there are exceptions and they probably are discriminated against for no proper reason.
Admittedly though, handing out CDs is a bit bloody stupid.

Are they going to distribute a CD to all the law abiding country folk persecuted by 'travellers' -more Pc nonsense, more money wasted.
Might be a good start if they gave Tony Martin an OBE for the public service he rendered our society by shooting that little
er, (think of all the burglaries he prevented), and maybe issued the public not with a CD, but carte blanche to act as Mr Martin did when finding these vermin on your property. (In case you hadn't guessed, pikey's are strong candidates for number one spot in my hates list...)

OK, but did they pay council tax / income tax / etc.? Or were you subsidizing their education? I have no problem with people who want to live that way, but either they contribute and then use schools/hospitals/public services/etc., or they don't contribute and make their own arrangements for healthcare and schooling.
Not even sure about the latter. I mean, plenty of people on here have private healthcare and no kids / kids at private school, so why are they paying as much tax as those using the latter?
What gets my back up and I expect many others it that travellers don’t appear to contribute anything at all to society.
Local councils are obliged to provide sites for them at a cost to council taxpayers.
If travellers are as misunderstood as they claim to be. They must also make a positive effort to be seen to be part of the community, instead of parasites and criminals hiding behind their anonymity.

Exactly. Not only do they not contribute - they take, take, take and abuse anyone and everyone who is in their path. They really are precisely described by the word "parasite".

Sorry but when your husband has been threatened with being shot, your daughter with being raped, and your bank balance reduced by nearly £10,000 just to remove these f***ers from your own place of business then there is nothing you or anyone else can say to me to change my opinion of these scum. You are wrong, it is not a minority, at least in East London. Their behaviour is a way of life which IMHO should be exterminated like with any other vermin.

Sorry, but not surprised to hear of the troubles you have had with them Diane. You are absolutely correct in saying that the vast majority of travellers behave like this - it is their culture.
The do-gooders who think they are able to integrate them into general society are totally delusional - pikeys do not want to be integrated - they see themsleves as outside of society anyway. Thus they have no social conscience at all.
For years, my family (property developers on a large scale) paid endlessly to get court injunctions to remove these vermin from private land. Even after my Father had paid for the court order, he then had to pay to clear up the mountains of filth they left behind, and replace all the equipment they stole. And the finally, the cost of repairing the massive damage they always did.
They are parasites and they laugh at how society and the law is toothless...
They need to be sent back to Ireland where most of the bastards originate from...and ffs we need to ensure that no more come over. Unbelievably, there seem to be another 8000 heading our way, the damage they will do will be enormous.

Just waiting for reports of unusually high numbers of thefts of CD players
Thing is, in my mind, traveller does not equal Romany Gypsy. How about only giving these CDs out to people who can actually tell you what the name of the CD means - the real Romany Gypsies.

Thanks Alex,
Sorry for rant but this is a subject very close to home, and one I am very passionate about. You never see the likes of my husband interviewed on tv, just the poor hard done by Pikey woman. Makes my blood boil that so few people seem to see the reality of these parasites. I had a great deal of trouble preventing my husband from aquiring and using a firearm. Guess who would be in jail now. In the US I guess it could be interprered as defence. Here a waste of f***ing time. Sorry I shall retreat from thread now before I really say somrthing I might regret.

I can't think of a more secular, insular, group of people than 'travellers'. Perhaps, if they sent their kids to school, they may find that people would be more accepting of them, and likewise. Only problem with allowing their kids a decent education, and with it the key to true liberty is that their 'culture' will eventually disappear. So what's the answer for them?, tap-up the best mug-punter of all, a benign government to exploit with its own short-sighted policies. Expect to see plenty more travellers arriving from the Emerald Isle once the ramparts are finally breached and taken for all its worth.
