Hi All,

I'm looking for a good quality cat7 cable on a drum as well as already fitted with RJ45 on each end.

I understand drums come in 100-305m lengths.

What I can't find is the cable with the RJ45 at each end in lengths of 40-50m.

Can anyone help?

I've searched google and keep hitting dead ends with the cables with the RJ45 connectors already on.

What do you need it for? CAT7 is overkill. They were selling CAT7 in Japan last Summer so has probably come down in price since then. A quick Google had RS Components doing 5m CAT7 cables for £63

I bought a 300m reel of CAT5e for only a bit more than that just last week. Ends and crimp tools are cheap enough too

Cat 7 cable is designed to give 10Gbit Ethernet over distances of up to 100m.

So if you want 10Gbit data over those distances it might be worth the money, using standard RJ45 with cat 7 cable is not optimum and will likely negate any advantage, if you're going to this effort then use GG45.

In any likely hood I doubt you need it. If you don't need it I really wouldn't bother.

It takes 5 minutes to fit the RJ45s to cable - what sort of quantity of 50m lengths are you talking about?

All you need is a crimping tool, some RJ45 connectors and ideally a tester like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0000AZK08/

If you're doing cabling it's a useful skill to have

I want to transmit 4k over 40m.

Therefore I believe I need cat7.

I don't believe you do.

I believe you can stream 4Ktv and UHDTV at around 25Mps. You can streamm 100mps to 100m with no problems on cat5e and you can stream 1Gbit upto 100m with no problems on Cat6e.

The definition of the TV screen (i.e pixel count) is not important, what's important is the rate of the data you want to stream.

Hi All..OP here.

So it looks like RS Online have lots of different reels available, some with single copper core others with lots of tiny strands.

Which type is best?

Stranded will be more expensive as is more flexible and less likely to break. However neither like tight bends.

Thanks Racecar!

Are either easier to put the rj45 or gg45 on to?

Solid core is easier to terminate. Did you see my link for pre made?

If you terminate yourself use Ezy crimps much easier.

The pre-made ones look great but just cat6.

I would love to future proof.

Cat7 is not really worth it. Cat6 is nearly as good and is much cheaper.

If you want to future proof then put in fibre.

You can't make up a Cat7 patch cable by crimping connectors onto bulk cable. If you really want Cat7 cable then this company will make you up a custom patch cable with Cat7 cable but it will only be certified as Cat6a:

Why is that? Isn't it the same as any other shielded cable, like direct burial, that needs shielded connectors?

If you subsequently needed something funky like GG45 or TERA connectors to take advantage of full Cat7 bandwidth (dependent on the equipment on either end), I'd have thought they could be added later

You can get CAT7 ends but as the cable is thicker you can't use standard crimp style. They are horrendously expensive too.

We now run fibre if CAT6 has limitations for the job.

As above, no need fot CAT 7.

CAT5e or CAT6 is more than enough for 4K over 40m. The newer HDMI extenders will do full fat 4K hdr no problems.

If you want to future proof, run fibre.

As said above, CAT6 will be fine at 40M

We tend to install CAT6A in every install now as well as OM4 4 Core fibre.
