Cheap(ish) car for light work (client visits) and home use
Discussion
I'm due to start a new job soon. Part of the role is the odd visit to client sites to do some training etc. Problem is, I don't have a car at the moment as I sold mine last October (current job doesn't require one).
I'm taking a pay cut for the new role so my budget is only around £2k. Is there anything at this price point that could be considered reliable and a bit respectable?
I'm not sure just yet what mileages I'll be doing. However, a petrol car will be fine for now.
Other requirements, I guess, will be plenty of room (for family stuff at weekends) and decent economy.
I would love a barge (E39, Ls400, E Class), but wouldn't want something that could potentially turn into a money pit.
The other option is to look at leasing or financing something modern. However, it's a new job (risky as have probation period) and i don't like the idea of anything other than the mortgage being on finance.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Not the most desireable car on the planet but should be reliable enough for your budget.

That Civic is good. You could go very boring but competent and buy a Mondeo or Focus. A 1.8 petrol will upset nobody, drive well and cost almost nothing to run. They are rock reliable and when it does need some maintenance every mechanic in the country will say "yeah, I can sort that out."
There are more interesting choices, but you haven't asked for interesting. You said reliable and inexpensive.

Thanks all. The Civic does look good.
A Focus did cross my mind as they are very common and like you say, should be easy to fix.
I didn't say exciting, but something like a barge would be great. However, you always have the trade off with price/cost to run on something like a barge.
I ran a Mazda 3 for six years so I could go back and have a look at another one. I know a bit about them too.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

I know my thread didn't clearly state this, but I was looking at things like that in the early hours of this morning.

I'd rather source a private one though. A trader at that price is a no go for me.

I was using that one as an example because it seemed a nice example.
There's lots of crap out there.
It wouldn't bother me if it was a trader as long as it's priced right and seems like a decent car. At least you have some comeback if it turns out to be a dog.

I'm bias but I'd pick the Mercedes they're robust not bad when it comes to parts & a good Indy will maintain one easily.
Thanks for the links chaps. I'm still having a good look around.
I know this is very boring, but I found a Mondeo near to me that doesn't look too bad from the pictures:

Maybe something like this will do for now until I find something more interesting. At least the Mondeo should get me by for the immediate period. I know it's a bit cheap for a trader.
