Harness eyebolt advice

Hi there

I'm trying to sort a way of fitting some sort of harness in the passenger side my old Lotus. The chassis tubes are quite thin and there are holes that would take a 3/8th eyebolt. However it seems all standard harness bolts are 7/16. I really don't want to enlarge the holes as there's not much meat in the tubes. I can get 3/8th eyebolts which are used in the lifting industry and are rated 250kg each. I'm thinking that an accident that's severe enough to break one of these eyebolts isn't going to leave much of the car left!

Is there any legislation regarding fitting belts? Has anyone had this sort of problem before?

The 250kg is a safe working load (SWL) in reality they will take 500 kg or more. I wouldn't worry about it. But then again I wouldnt worry about enlarging the holes to 7/16. Either way it will be alreet as we say up here in the north.

If it's for a road car that's not exempt from seatbelts the belts AND MOUNTINGS have to comply to a spec .Probably listed in Construction and Use regs .
If it doesn't have to comply with the regs then 3/8 should be fine but I would recommend plates or washers shaped to the tubes . These spread the load and help to spread the shock load if it all goes wrong big time .
