Clip-on ties, not something I'm hugely clued up on... I bought what I thought was a decent one the other day, via the magic of the Internet. But when it arrived it was an irritating berk.

However I wear it, the clip bit is clearly visible - is this a rubbish one or do they all do that?

I need to wear one but I'd far prefer that it at least looks vaguely like a real tie.

Forgive me but you mind me asking why? I appreciate that you may have a genuine reason as to why you can't wear a "real" tie, but for the life of me I can't think what that might be.

Presumably safety, so that if pulled it falls off.

As with all things , you get what you pay for ,cheap clip-ons do look awful ,most of the security service type ones need a bit of tweeking to cover the clip.

Because I need to be in places where it would be a terrible idea to wear a pretty-coloured noose around my neck.

Recently in a gents outfitters, when buying a tie, I was asked by the young chap of 18 or so who was helping me pick out a tie whether. The cheek of it! I said as much and he told me that a lot of ties, esp epically school ties, nowadays are clip on.

And where the tie isn't part of a uniform.

OP, would you not be better off without a tie at all?

IIRC Plod ties are clip ons.

Some nightclubs require that their staff wear ties, but clip on ones to avoid them being used against them.

Off the top of my head and in rough reverse order of danger:
  • Doorman
  • Front-line police
  • Close-protection operative
  • Lawyer in negotiations with IS
  • Teacher in my son's school

I can imagine there are quite a few civvie jobs that involve spending time inside prisons where I'd prefer to be wearing a clip-on tie (assuming it's not possible to just not wear a tie at all for whatever reason)

We always had clip on ties at the airport. Smart for the customer facing aspect of the job, but clip on so they didn't get trapped in the mechanisms of wheelchairs or when we were physically assisting passengers, and (not that it every happened to me but to some of the chaps) in case you came across a load of unhappy passengers who wanted an excuse for an argument.

London Underground staff use clip on ties.

Now you know.

ETA: so do many taxi drivers.

Surely they can produce a normal silk tie that clips at the back of the neck, rather than at the front?
