It's just a bit of a swell with some blustery rain.Dunno if it's exactly the same for the Seahawk, but the Lynx can select negative pitch to stick it to deck once it lands, and has a grapple thing on the bottom to attach it firmly to the deck. A small civil helicopter landing on a yacht is probably a lot more dangerous as once it's down its only got gravity holding it there.

I've spent the last five years working in providing guidance to reduce and highlight risks to the operation of maritime helicopters to ships and it's not an easy task for highly trained test pilots, let alone the average fleet pilot. I don't know how much experience this pilot had, but the aerodynamics of the ship can have a huge impact on helicopters which can catch even the most experienced pilot out, particularly when they're right over the flight deck or sometimes even when they're on the flight deck and the rotors are still spinning. The local wind conditions don't even need to be particularly high for problems to occur and you find yourself running out of control margin or exceeding torque limits.

My cousin was in a gryochopter crash last sunday, Both ok bar a few stiches so it seems my view that if you crash in flying thing your dead is wrong.

I heard that a loose item had been drawn into the tail rotor. If so, this would likely cause the helicopter to rotate and the pilot may have elected to lift away from the ship and ditch in the sea (I see it has floatation equipment). But, of course, these things can happen very quickly with limited options. I do think a 'fenestron' tail rotor is safer if landing on a ship.
It would have been the responsibility of the ship's crew to make sure the landing deck was clear and safe, and the pilot's responsibility to judge if an approach and landing was safe. Hope everyone is now ok.
