I did think of a Polo. I found this one, the spec seems okay, not sure if its a low model though:

How about a diesel Fiesta? Mrs ZS got one a couple of years ago to do a similar mileage. Decent spec (she got a 1.6 Titanium), drives well, and has averaged around 65mpg over the 40k miles since we've had it. She had a 1.6 Zetec diesel before that as well.

One other tip, once you've decided on a car try looking for part ex stock at other manufacturers main dealers. We picked up the 1st Fiesta from a main Renault dealer for about a grand less than similar spec Fiesta's at Ford dealers. Was a case of being in the right place at the right time, it was due to be punted off to auction the next day

Not bad those Fiesta's, would you recommend anything else? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Seems overpriced compared to this (approved used with warranty, and very low mileage): http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...
or this: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...
Both of which are very similar underneath to the Polo.
I quite like the Vauxhall Astra but I am not sure what they are like: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Having ran a Polo at a similar annual mileage, I would step up a size.
This isn't for reasons of refinement as the Polo is not bad in that respect, but mechanically they're not as durable as the bigger cars.
I should clarify that; the engine and gearbox will be fine, but the ancillary stuff, suspension, bushes etc are not as heavily built and they seem to wear out quite a bit sooner.
That's just my experience though.

Thanks for that yeah, they look lovely little cars as do the Fiesta's but I may look at something medium in size, Golf, Astra etc but I have no experience of them. This isn't for reasons of refinement as the Polo is not bad in that respect, but mechanically they're not as durable as the bigger cars.

There seem to be plenty of Peugeot 208 diesels well within budget. And if you're not put off by mileage, there are a handful of 115bhp six-speeders about for £6k too. I'd go for one of those personally and steer clear of the gutless 1.4HDi version.
Still road tax exempt but the right sort of power/gearing to make motorway journeys more relaxed.
