So first post here and looking for some ideas,

After selling some property I was all set to splash out on a Evo x FQ360, looked at a few and decided I wanted one but just as I'm about to buy I'm having second thoughts.

I've got a budget of around £20K and the car I buy needs to fit a few criteria;

For me, it has to be either RWD or AWD, needs to be around the 350-400bhp mark and needs to have a quality chassis / handling as we live on the edge of miles and miles of twisty country road. It also needs to be a looker. i have a bit of a fetish for detailing, turbos and mods.

For my missus, it needs to have 4 seats and needs to be able to do the dd shopping run etc, basically a car you can 'live' with, pretty mush her only criteria as we have 2 kids and will use it for trips away etc.

So the EVO was perfect, ticked all the boxes and I could upgrade further as funds allow but this afternoon I found myself looking at a 200SX and some old R33 Skylines, I've had a few project's in the past and still feel that itch.

So if you were in my shoes, taking into account the above, what would you do, Evo, ready to roll out of the box, build your own (ideas??) or buy something else?

The high power Evos are quite precious about servicing. Every ~4k miles or so.

Fast, and they look good too. I saw one only the other day and it stood out for all the right reasons.

£50 for oil and filter not exactly going to break the bank though smile

Guessing this doesn't need to be a daily?

If you were set on an Evo go for it, and tune it to your liking. 20k is an enviable budget to play with.

I'd have an earlier one though personally, 4, 5 or 6 would do. Is a TME in budget?

I love Silvias and Skylines but its hard to find decent ones with caring owners that havent been ragged silly.

I'm pretty sure 20k can get you an Evo and S body of some sort, so why not both?

That much is true. But the services aren't just an oil and filter....

Remember - any small displacement / high power output engine will require a lot of care to maintain a good condition.

High specific output engines can be temperamental - and so require care to use daily.

And the rest of the car will be pricey should you need any spares for repairs or maintenance.

Not trying to put you off at all - id love to see another fast Evo as a daily. Just go into the ownership with open eyes.

£20k gives a lot of options - lower end Astons, Maseratis, C63 AMG, RS4/6, M3/5/6, remapped 335d (LOL)

FYI - the pics are just google search images. I couldn't get pictures from Autotrader to display in the forum.

Look at it.... You know you want one!

Or, here's a bit of inspiration for other choices..... Take a look wink

C63AMG (with the proper 6.2L V8)

RS6 (with the lovely V10)

DB7 with the quintessential Aston V12 - a touch more than budget, but a lovely motor

Maseratis Quatropporte - LOADS of choice here. And what a bloody great noise.

M3 - tons of choice here too, across the range for M cars

If you have never owned one, do it. For the age they are monumentally capable cars. The only temper (hence the quote) is the ride is very firm. Family may not take to that like you. I know mine don't.

Don't worry about servicing, it's not that major a headache however it is worth doing some reading up, especially as you are capable of splashing a fair amount. £20k should get you a very nice example if a bit of homework is done.

Still, the other day my mate and I went out for a drive, I took my 6, he took his year old Litchfield tuned GTR, We both knew which was car faster, more extreme, but we also knew which car had more appeal and driver satisfaction.

(Oh and yeh I am biased but i'd take an decent Evo over an R32/200sx any day)

They are quick cars, no doubt, but if Lichfield didn't ruin your mates car when they tuned it, the GTR would eat an Evo if it wasn't very, very special. And your mate isn't a granny scared of pressing the accelerator and letting the gears run out...

Well that's what I was saying, there's no doubt which car is faster and more capable. Of course the GTR....

st. Sorry mate, I was ing it, and through tiredness and rum consumption, I didn't read the post fully.

No doubt your Evo will be more involving, and probably feels a lot faster on a B road too.

I really like them, and seeing an FQ360 the other day reminded me how cool they are in the flesh.

I'm a bit jealous....

I wouldn't rule out an Evo 9 for that money, certainly I'd drive both 9 and 10 in your position. If you want more of your money back at the end of it, an MR360 E9 would be the better bet, prices are already on the up, and it's arguably the better car. Probably also less civilised though. The 9 is a very easy car to get around 400 brake from, and they're very reliable at that level. Also loads of knowledgeable Indys out there, and a better bet than the dealers in my experience.

In your position I'd also try a Lexus IS-F, possibly even more reliable, and a great car to drive. Auto only though. The suspension is too hard as standard, but that's an easy, £600 fix on them.

VW Golf R Mk7.

Does pretty much everything, from B&Q to the schoolrun to work meetings to roundabout grandprix to B-road thrash. Very easy and cheap to modify to 400-500bhp and servicing is ~£150 a year if you shop around.

Forget your Golf R's S3 etc if you want to have some real fun get yourself one of these:

Subaru Impreza Spec C

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Subaru-Impreza-wrx-Sti-S...

Evo's are just as much fun but will cost more to run:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-Mitsubishi-Lancer-E...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MITSUBISHI-EVO-9-MR-IX-4...

I know you said you don't want FWD but for B Roads it's hard to ignore the R26 R/Megane 275 Trophy & the prices are pretty firm or the MK2 Focus RS:

Watching with interest as my criteria are the same. £20k or so, RWD or 4wd and 300bhp+. Will be the daily car
